Two restoration questions
70 SX convertible with 455 and no AC.
I have the fan shroud and it fits. Mine was missing and I bought this one used. Not sure if it is correct 70 or the 71-72. I see from various websites that 71-72 is different than 70 shroud. How do you tell between the two?
Also, I know there was a debate on plastic vs. metal torque converter cover on TH400 for 70 and what year the switch was made. Any new info out there on which one my car should have? Mine came with an aftermarket chrome one, but I have originals in both metal and plastic in my "parts bin"
Thanks, Pete

Pete, the 402995 shroud be correct for 69 &70. As far as the t/q cover, my 69 442 had tin and is the original. The 70 442 had a cracked plastic unit on it, original trans, but unsure if that cover is correct or not. Both cars are a/c units, I don't know if this helps at all, but that's what I have with mine.

A plastic torque converter cover came on 70 and 71s.
I may be mistaken, but the opening on the 71 shroud maybe larger due to the 19 1/2" sized fan.

Agreed rocketbrian, but my car did have the lower metal shroud clips spot welded on the rad support, so I am assuming it had a shroud originally (one clip was broken/rusted off and I had to make a new one) And the top plate was drilled for shroud. Of course, after 40 plus years, these items could have been swapped as well.

If I remember correctly, the 71-72 shrouds have some reinforcing ribs cast into the sides of the shroud, the 68-70's are smooth.
My 68 Hurst and 70 W30 ( obviously both Lansing built) both have plastic torque converter covers. I've been looking for an answer to this myself - metal vs. plastic - maybe it's an assembly plant issue?

Not sure accuracy of info, but I just now saw on Supercars Unlimited catalog for sale, it says the plastic converter cover for 71 and up, but can also be used on earlier 64-70 models that had the metal cover. So that timeframe might be the rough switchover but I am sure different plants changed over at different times and some may have changed over in earlier or later years depending on supply of the two different styles.
