I'm not sure that this would qualify as "works" in most people's dictionaries.

Could you describe its actual behavior?

Works but is stuck at redline? Is this like all those cars listed for sale that say the air conditioner works but JUST needs a charge?
If it is stuck at redline how is it working? I'm not trying to be a wise ***, I really am confused. Is the needle loose from the pin? How do you know it is working?

Does the needle go back to 0 when you shut the engine off, or does it just stay put at redline?

OK here is a better explanation. The tach works. It goes to zero. When you start the car it goes to recline that is its idle point. If my car idled at Red line it would be awesome. I've heard there is an adjustment on the back of the tach. This is an original 455 w30 car point distributor. Any real help would be welcome.

I think the adjustment feature was not intended to correct an "issue" , but was used at the mfg of the gauge to fine tune it. If it were mine, I would check the connections at the back and at the coil etc and work thru the issue. Based on your note, sounds like both the tack and clock functioned as intended before, and now the clock is not working, and the tack reads at max with the engine running..Again I would start start with checking connections...
