72 choke stove

What is this crust on the choke stove tubes? Also, the new replacement stove I have is smaller in length than this original one. Will it matter?

Classic example of a redox reaction (reduction-oxidation) where oxygen robs iron of electrons - forming rust. If this is the first time the stove-pipe has been replaced in 46 years, it should be expected to show plenty of rust. I replaced mine and it demonstrated the same rust. I believe my replacement was the same size as the original (I ordered from ILT). Did you order the correct replacement? Assuming you did, I doubt a very minor difference in size would be significant.

The choke stove sits inside the exhaust crossover. That's not only rust but also combustion residue (carbon buildup) from the exhaust.

  • Interesting, thanks.
  • My replacement was from Fusick. Looking at all the other parts folks, including ILT, they all appear to be the smaller/shorter version. Must not be a big issue apparently.

That would be an easy 2 minute cleanup in my sandblast cabinet. Good as new and OEM to boot.

It's a metal tube sitting in the flow of 1100ºF exhaust gases, so a couple inches shorter isn't going to make much of a difference on the temperature of the air being drawn out of it and across the bimetallic spring in the choke housing.

So you are correct, it's not a big issue.

Apparently there are two different styles, the long & short unit. Evidently they used the short unit when they made them. I have them brand new for $20 compared to $23 from Inlinetube. These are excellent repo's that fit and function fine and comes with the gasket.

Yes, and it's shorter than OEM.

When I put the heat riser block off plates in, we had to cut off the heat tube, my choke works perfect.
it was a Royal Hop up back in the day.

I know a few F body parters, but I think the only parts that may work for you guys is parts from the 403. If they work.
