70-72 air cleaner heat tube extension repair

Hi guys - I picked up another 71-72 dual snorkel air cleaner for my eventual next V Code (it’s inevitable that I’ll have #5 at some point). This NH-Code unit is in nice shape overall

but the hot air tube extension mount is rusted and thin. Is this extension piece just tack welded on? I’d be interested in how any if you may have repaired one of these. Thanks.

Terry - Here's a pic of the underside of an OAI snorkel I'm working on currently. There appears to be 3, maybe 4 (not 100% sure) oblong spot weld areas around that "support ring" that attach it to the snorkel itself.

I've had air cleaners where this piece was coming loose somewhat....probably from someone yanking hard too many times when removing the air cleaner when the heat tube was a bit stuck or rusted to this "adapter" piece.

That’s super helpful Patton! Thank you. I’m looking at grabbing yet another one of these units but your pic lets me know what needs to be done to fix this one. What did you do to remove the extension on that snorkel or was that one already apart?

Terry - this snorkel is still complete...nothing removed or needing to be removed. The pic and flash may make it look like something's been removed but it hasn't.

I just saw what looked like the odd "divots" in the outer support/attachment ring and sanded away some of the original paint around there to get a better look at those spots.

Wow, that picture angle was almost directly up and down so it looked like that whole extension piece and ring were removed. I appreciate the input

Has anyone else done a repair on one of these?

That piece is not exclusive to this air cleaner.....for example, a Buick Electra 4 bbl air cleaner has the same 2" OD piece attached to the snorkel. Probably a slew of other GM air cleaners with the same size piece for a donor. Cheap to buy if they come off of an otherwise not-very-desirable air cleaner base and cheap to ship as you can have someone just hack off part of the snorkel and ship.
