With today’s modern medicine, your father has more than a fighting chance. Even with this reassurance, we realize this is stressful for everyone involved. We will not only include your father in our prayers, but your entire family, as we know this is rough on them as well.

God Bless

Prayers to you and your family, your Dad sounds like a tough dude that will get through this with lots of prayers. My Dad had an aneurysm in a main artery to his brain. Once repaired he lived a normal life till 82. He had his when he was 37.

Thanks to everyone for all the prayers and support. He will be going to an appointment with the surgeon Thursday. He had another test and from what I understood, they said even though it is at 4.6 cm he still had a thick wall for the size. I took that as a good thing but they didn't say that. We will know alot more Thursday evening. I don't understand much of anything when it comes to health issues so I may have everything I just said all wrong. All I do know is he had a second doctor say it needs to be addressed very soon.

Sounds like the Dr. is positive about it regarding his comment about the thickness of the wall but most importantly he is monitored. He is still in our prayers. Thanks for the update.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, your father, and the rest of your family. I have an abdominal aortic aneurysm that is at 3cm and they only make me come in once a year to make sure it hasn't gotten any bigger. There is no telling how many people have an aneurysm and don't know it since there are no symptoms. I am 59 and could have been walking around with it for most of my life. As you and others have said, it sounds like the doctors are concerned but not worried about your father's condition, so I hope that everything turns out OK.

A good report today. I hope i am explaining this correct. The original test was 5cm with a hand held test and that is what tossed red flags. Then they did a cat scan and it was 4.6 so they decided it was not such an emergency and done more tests. A couple doctors reviewed the tests and determined that the scan was at a slight angle and made it appear to be larger. Now they are saying that the official size is 4.3 and they do not need to do any more than just monitor it. He is on alot of restriction for the next 6 months and then they will look at it again to compare the sizes. They also told him that he may have had this for years and could likely even just have a larger aorta to begin with. They just want him to take it easy till they monitor it over time.

Thank you so much for all the support and prayers.
Eric

Updating an old thread. The doctors have been monitoring his aneurysm every 6 months and had not changed till now. It went to 5.4 from 4.3 in a short amount of time. They are doing open heart surgery on the 20th. The surgeon is 66 years old and this is all he has done for the past 35 years. His own records show that his results are at a lower risk factor than the national average. After knowing what is involved in this surgery it make me nervous. They have to cut the blood flow to his brain for 12.5 to 13 minutes to fix the Aorta. Then if there is an air bubble when they start the pump he will have a stroke. After that they have to do work on the bottom side of the heart but I don't know what that is other than something to do with the Aneurysm. They are saying that he is extremely healthy other than this and minimal blockage in any of his arteries. I have faith that all will be ok but they are doing things to him that I did not even know was possible. I know nothing about this kind of stuff.

Eric, it sounds like he's in competent hands. I understand your apprehension and am sure everything will work out fine. I'm not a med guy either so I have to put my faith in the powers that be, and the higher powers of God. Whatever happens, we'll be here for you.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. The Doctor came out and said he is surprised at just how healthy his heart was. Said that everything went exactly as planned and no complications. He also said that with the severity and location of his particular aneurysm that having zero complications is unusual. 13 hours after the surgery he got up and moved himself to the chair to eat breakfast. By 16 hours after he was walking in the hallway. The doctor ask him how he keeps his heart so healthy and my dad said by eating junk food.

I was a little surprised how far up his neck they had to cut. They had to replace it much farther up than I thought. From the bottom of his heart around to the top and up his neck.

Thanks again to all the CO community for everything!

Eric

Thank you for the update and great news. Now to make sure your Dad follows doctor's orders, which usually curtails most activities until given the doctor's okay to resume some normal daily activities, which for some like me was harder to follow than for others.

I knew this site had a good bunch of guys on here, but it is still amazing, that you had this many concerned people sending prayers for someone that they didn't even know.Count yourself lucky to be a member of C.O. and having so many wonderful "True Friends"! Prayer is the most powerful help that you could have ask for, and they seemed to have worked.Best of health to your dad and the whole family. Larry

Eric,

I've followed this thread but haven't posted until now. My mother in law and my wife's cousin both died from aortic aneurysms. Neither had any forewarning. Your dad is very lucky. They often have no symptoms and are usually found by accident when they are looking for something completely different. My wife's cousin was only 42. My mother in law was 65. Enjoy every moment you can with your dad.
