Our 76 Olds vs a wild turkey
Here are some pictures of what a wild turkey can do to a car travelling 60MPH head on haha. Couldn't dodge it in my 76 olds ya know.. so I rammed it damit!!
Insurance will cover painting the hood, roof, and replace the windshield, less my $500. deductible
The wife and I pulled glass out of each our arms and face for about a half hour!! That sucked, never thought a windshield would shatter and project shrapnel glass at the driver and passenger!!
Not a shot of Wild Turkey in sight during that deal, I tellin'ya .
Didn't take long to pour the Jack ' n' ice , in case of infection ya'know. Put-e-r-ther!
Cheers
Eric

Yes, good thing we walked away. The rear view mirror landed in the back seat with the glass still in tack around the glue. You can see the hole in the windshield where the mirror was.
I never knew windshields couldn't withstand that type of impact.
The roof rail is pushed back about 3" outside bulged about the same inside , how crazy is that . The body shop say's they can fix it.
I can only hope the next windshield will have much better inner safety plastic.

I'm not sure if the glass was original, It hasn't been replaced since I purchased the car in 1997, but I get what you sayin' Koda.
Maybe windshields should have an expiry date on them.

That brings back some real bad memories. My wife had always wanted an AMC Javelin so we found a nice '74 up in MI. I flew up to drive it home to Kansas. I was just across the border in IN. when a turkey flew up off the side of the road and hit in almost exactly the same spot with the exact same results. The windshield exploded just the way yours did. If I had not being wearing sun glasses I would certainly have had glass in my eyes. I had to drive t to the next town for a new windshield. Every time I hit a bump more glass fell out of it. There was glass everywhere in the car. We were still finding glass in hidden places almost a year later. Glad everyone is ok. Good luck with the repairs

Thanks guys!!
If I had Run, I would have been drinkin' that as well haha, I'll make sure to grab a bottle once I get er' back!
Geez,I haven't drank run since Captain Morgan had me walking on my knees makin' a fool of myself haha.
The JD sure took down the red bumps I had on my arms, neck and face during and after we picked the glass out of our skin.
@rand5204, good to hear you and your wife made out okay as well. Sunglasses saved our eyes as well.
Cheers

Can anyone confirm if the new water based paint kits start @ $2500.00 ?
The body shop quoted me $10k to paint my 76 outside of what the insurance wants to do.
The insurance will replace the windshield, pull the kink out of the roof, cover up the scratched area on the hood and paint the roof.
The paint still looks good considering I painted it it 1997. Clear coat is faded some with minor spider web scratches everywhere. Wax will clear up the spider webbing but not for long, I have to re-wax to keep them at a minimum.
I may just have to live with what the insurance will cover and be out of pocket only $500.00 for the deductible.
Does this sound insane to anyone here?

Some progress on our 76, The roof has been stripped and the kink taken out. I wasn't happy with the skim coat of filler over the roof. However, the body shop says the skim coat of filler will protect the metal for many more years than just shooting primer on it and painting.
I had to take him for his word since their was no filler on the roof prior to the damage.
I'd really like to know what you guys think of this new prepping process.
Here are a few pics, the hood still needs to be stripped and painted.

Finding a good body shop that will fix old cars isn't easy and doesn't come cheap. But most people here know much more than me about paint and sheet metal.
A 1976 car in the UK would quite likely have a toughened glass windshield, if your car had one you probably wouldn't have been making any posts lately...
Roger.

Putting a skim coat of filler on panels and sanding allows the surface to be perfectly smooth without any imperfections. When I learned auto body I was taught that there may be imperfections, dimples and waves in a panel you can't even see. A good body man would still be able to feel them though.
I notice the jamoke doing the sanding isn't even wearing a filter mask. That's a good way to kill your lungs...
BTW, make sure the shop sprays a good primer over the putty and sands again before spraying the paint.

I didn't notice buddy sanding without a mask. Its his health, I just hope he knows what he's doing. If the filler bubbles out in a couple years I will be calling my insurance company wanting it re-done.
I'm waiting on more progress pics and I will ask them what primer they used.
They are suppose to be a 5 star classic restoration shop according to our insurance adjuster, hopefully it gets done properly.
Roger, The windshield guy said it was the original windshield. The one getting installed is suppose to be much better, hopefully it will stand up better than the original.

If you have concerns voice them to the shop and your insurance company. Better to catch them cutting corners now and send your Olds to a different shop than to pick up the car, drive it home and realize a few days later that the job wasn't done right.
