Good morning everyone.

Guess where I'm not. Florida. Got up extra early and got the pickup loaded up, hit the road and the front wheel was making a terrible noise. Sounds like a wheel bearing. This is a noise it's made for awhile but not real loud, and I've gone on trips with this noise, but this morning it was rather loud and I could feel it. So we came back home. Went to the Awful house this morning and driving with the window down I could hear what sounded like a Ujoint squeal. This truck has CV joints for the front axles and I just have the feeling that if I drive much more something bad will happen.

So, this afternoon I'm loading up the car and heading down. I'm not thrilled about having Tiger in the car, and I won't be able to bring everything I want, but I need to be down there this weekend so it will be okay.

Johnny and Kenneth have you guys gotten a break in your temps yet?

Beautiful out. I think our temps are finally going to give us a break. Getting to be that time of year. I like that, but I don't like what's coming. I'm like a mule being lead by a rope, feet dug in and someone pulling on the lead and my head stretched out and not moving. That's what I feel like when it gets close to winter.

Okay gonna try it again. Hope everyone has a good day.

So far 51 days above 110º and it's not over yet.

But there's a cold front on the way. Look at that, it's gonna drop below 100!

Good morning guys (still barely morning for me),
Slantflat - Sorry to hear about your truck troubles. Be safe going to Florida.

Fun71 - Glad to see you might get a little relief from the crazy heat soon. My wife and I have discussed getting a small apartment in the sun belt to get away from winter for a couple months. I've talked before how I have relatives around Green Valley. We are going to have to really rethink that after what you've been through. Would really just like a place to get away from.the snow in December thru February.

Well my buddy and I made that ride to Jefferson City yesterday along the Missouri River. Beautiful day for a ride, sunny with a high of 82, and low humidity. Pretty long ride, about 275-miles, and a lot of winding, twisty stuff which wears you out a little more. We stopped in the old German town of Hermann on the south side of the river and ate at a riverfront park (pic). It was a nice ride, but I was pooped when I got home. I'm probably going to ride Sunday or Monday with a different buddy over to a place called Giant City State Park in southern Illinois that's known for it's natural rock formations. It's located north of Paducah, KY a little ways. I hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe holiday weekend.

Yes the temps are still high but in a few days finally below 100, bummer on the wheel bearing noise, sounds like you knew it was coming.

Well, I got my bear silhouettes cut out sanded and painted [ I decided to use Flex Seal hoping/thinking it would keep the exterior plywood from coming apart] in a couple of spots the spray flex seal go too thick. Anyone got any ideas on how to re do?

I've never used the stuff before, It;s kinda like rubber spray in a rattle can. Do you think I can sand the bad spots and re apply?

I've seen the commercials for the Flex Seal but I've never used it. I was going to suggest what you did, sanding. Good luck!

Hi guys - Going to jump the gun and say good morning early because my buddy and I are headed out for that Giant City State Park ride at 0700. Supposed to be pretty again tomorrow although a little warmer with a high around 88 or 89. I don't mind the hot weather on the bike as long as I'm moving and not stuck in stop and go traffic. The whole route tomorrow is very rural so we shouldn't have to worry about traffic, just wildlife. Hopefully I can get a couple good pics of the scenic vistas and rock formations I can post, they're supposed to be pretty impressive for Illinois. Hope everyone has a great Sunday!

Hi everyone.

Good trip to Florida yesterday in the car. I spread a sheet across the back seat and Tiger didn't make a mess at all. Funny seeing this car here again, it's the car I swapped my Mom when we got the Equinox.

So the new Cutlass was originally bought in Pensacola and I had the address to the original owner and the place it was bought at. So I went to find them today. The Olds place is no more, it's a gas station. The house is there, it looks old and poorly fixed up. I'm sure it was rather different back in the day. But I was able to see it so that's good enough for me.

Got quite a bit done around the house today. Yardwork, errands, tonight I'm gonna hang some pictures. Leaving after breakfast tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a good evening.

Slantflat - Glad your trip down went well. Safe travels going home.

Jamesbo - Sorry your garden didn't work out this year. My dad always had a garden, there were good years and bad years, but we always had fun with him messing with it.

My ride to Giant City State Park was a really good one. I never knew parts of southwestern Illinois were that hilly. The area around the park and the park itself reminded me of the Smokies, although not quite as mountainous. They have a large Lodge folks can stay in (pics), cabins, and tent/trailer camping. It is a beautiful place. They have a huge observation tower (pic) you can climb up in, and from it you can see this giant cross (pic) a long ways off on the ridgeline that's absolutely beautiful! Weather was perfect, but it was a long day, left out at 0700 and didn't get home until around 1630. I'm pooped! Going to take momma cruising in the 442 somewhere tomorrow, it needs it's legs stretched and I just want to get it out and drive it. Hope everyone has a great Labor Day!

dream, Tanks fer de pics, Looks like beautiful country.

I'm readying about Orson Wells, Guess where he was born in 1915 ?Kenosha Wisconsin Kinda like Atlanta, a good place to be FROM

I used to have a great garden, Enough for all my friends and family, I'd give away asparagus, tomatoes, squash etc Lots of folks would just drop by a pick what they wanted. Everyone had their favorite. My dad loved new potatoes, Kenny kept my okra picked, Harry would come and pick pole beans, He wasn't much for stooping over, so you could tell when he;d been buy, All the middle beans had been picked leaving the low ones . I spose like so many thing, those days are Gone with the Wind

One of the reason, I stay at it, is I'm fairly certain this is one of the oldest continuous gardens in this neck of the woods [1896] Kinda hate ta stop something that's been going that long

But like they say, The only thing constant is change

Getting a little nostalgic, so this song came to mind

FWIW, the highway He's singing about is I 20 east out of Atlanta and the drag strip is [was ]Yellow River where I saw the tragic wreck as a poor college kid in 1969 [couldn't pay the entrance fee so was sitting on the over side [luckily[] of I 20 in a cow pasture ]
http://www.gendisasters.com/georgia/...ident-mar-1969

Sorry Mike, I know you've heard this story 1000 times
Have a great day Olds friends

Jamesbo - Wow! What a horrible racing accident, and to think you actually witnessed it! That is something you could never get out of your head. I never heard about it before, but I was only 10 and growing up about 700-miles away.

The older I get, the more nostalgic I get, for sure. You speaking about your garden makes me think not only about my Dad's garden, but also my Mom's parents always kept a huge garden. Both my parents grew up in the south, my Dad in southeastern Tennessee near Dayton, and my Mom near Knoxville. Both sets of grandparents moved to Michigan after WWII to get jobs in the auto industry. Getting back to my grandparent's garden, my grandmother canned everything, and I mean everything! Her canned green beans, pickles, hot peppers, jellies, and jam were the best! My brother and I could sit down as boys at her kitchen table and devour a whole loaf of bread just eating toast with her jam on it. Her BlackBerry and Raspberry were my favorites. No woman could cook like my grandma! I sure miss those days now! Hope you guys have a great day!

Good Morning!! Just got back yesterday from a small camping trip with family and friends. Went over to Manistee and stayed a night in my friends fifth wheel. First time wife and I slept in a camper in maybe 10-15 years. Was fun. We were at the Orchard Beach State Park. We took a ride to the Manistee Pier and walked out to a light house out at the end of it. It was a great time. They have a really neat homemade grill that can slide up or down on a stake that is driven in the ground over the campfire. Had some really great food!!

Dream., I think the article says "Chain link fence" Believe me, It was hog wire and an accident waiting to happen\ I've heard/read stories of a spectator reaching over the fence to pick up a beer can his hand hit the chute causing the car to go haywire

My grand mother did the same.
When I was a kid, my mother had an emergency operation so I lived with my grandparents for a while. Every morning [before light] she go gather eggs and then make home made biscuits and a big breakfast. My grand father ate 3 a day [breakfast, lunch and diner ] as a desert with butter and cane syrup

When I got back home I asked my mother where were the biscuits, I think she threw a pop tart at me

I still make home made biscuits only once a week

Hilarious that you mentioned your Mom might have thrown a Pop Tart at you. There were a lot of Pop Tarts thrown at us kids in my house. I grew up in Battle Creek, MI, the home of Kelloggs and Post. My Mom was a nurse, and worked in the dispensary at the Kellogg's plant for 40-years doing health screenings and dealing with the industrial accidents. She was always bringing home free cereal and Pop Tarts by the case. Hey, by chance do you remember Danish Go-Rounds, they were a glorified Pop Tart, but were better because they had more filling? I actually worked there too for 3 summers while I was going to college. Great pay for a summer job, but we got all the sh#$ jobs. Nothing like using high pressure steam hoses to clean caked on sugar and grain from the inside of giant mixers! Somebody was always getting burned bad using those dammed things. Most people know that Kelloggs started in Battle Creek, but most don't know Post started there too. There was a lot of other grain industry there too, a Ralston Purina, Dad's Dogfood, Archway Cookies, and Cole's Garlic Bread to name a few off the top of my head.

Dumb luck

Well Happy Labor Day olds people
So I had a interesting few days I was working on my carburetor filing down my Airhorn Because I noticed it was warped and got a piece in my eye.
I was going To go to the emergency room but I flushed it out with Bosch and Lomb solution.

because I was able to see it directly on my cornea in the center.
The next day I went to urgent care and they confirmed I scratched my cornea gave me drops and a tetanus shot.
I do wear glasses and was being careful So I thought.
Finally feeling better today two days later

JOHNNYOLDS442 - Glad to hear your eye wasn't any worse than it is! Maybe some goggles next time???

Jamesbo - Just horrific, still can't get over the fact you were there that day, well sort of anyway.

Just got back from crusin with my wife in the 442. We didn't go too far, just cruised down to a small town about 15-miles from us, then back and on to another small town about 15-miles in the opposite direction. We had a nice drive. I don't have A/C in my car, and with it being 90-degrees it was getting a little warm towards the end. Kind of takes the fun out of it a little if you're uncomfortable. I may end up having someone put in a vintage A/C unit in it at some point so it will be more enjoyable during these St. Louis summers. Well I hope everyone had a nice long weekend!

I'm glad folks are able to get out and enjoy life. It's 108 degrees now and supposed to peak at 111 this afternoon, so we're holed up in the house yet again. The wife is going stir crazy and the dogs are giving me a weird look that is more than a bit unsettling. I'm hoping that we'll be able to get out in the next few weeks and start enjoying life again. I'm really getting concerned with the looks the dogs are giving me.

Hi everyone.

Long day today. Left Pensacola around 1130(my time) and got home after 6. Traffic was heavy the whole way home. I guess it was vacationers coming home from the last official weekend of summer. Normally I would have been home around 430.

Short week of work this week, hopefully I'm at my desk. Don't know what the rain is supposed to do, or not.

Time to hit the sack. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Wow, what a disaster at that dragstrip so many years ago. Dream, Cole's Bakery is headquartered here in Muskegon, about two mile from me. It always smells great when driving by. My mom canned as well, I remember her making blackberry jam from berries picked by my oldest brother when I was about 4-5 years old. Sealed the jar with paraffin. When I head to the Gilmore Car Museum, there is a stretch on M-89 that is nothing but corn, I always assumed that is was for Kelloggs. The guy that I bought my '69 from, was an electrician there. Fun, when I'm complaining about the snow in January, you'll be relaxing in the sun.

Yeah, I keep telling myself that one day soon the intense heat will be a thing of the past and I won't even remember wearing shorts and sandals every day.

But the dogs keep staring at me with with that odd look in their eyes...

1969w3155 - You wrote about how great it smells to drive by the Cole's Bakery. Where we lived in Battle Creek was close enough to the Kellogg's factory that on any given day we could smell the cereal cooking if the wind was right. When I moved to St. Louis, one of the first things I noticed was a very similar smell near where I worked and I immediately thought there must be a cereal factory or bakery nearby. Not quite, it was grain cooking, but what it was, was the Anheuser-Busch brewery that was only a few blocks away! It was amazing how similar the smells were!

Hi everyone.

Beautiful out, not too hot, not humid. I wonder if this is going to last now or if it's just a teaser. Rain later this week.

If your money was on me working in inspection, you get the prize. The one guy who was supposed to do it this week was on vacation through today, and the other guy is a POS and took off because the other guy wasn't going to be there. The lead comes back Thursday so I'm going to tell him those two need to make up the days that I've worked for them. We'll see how far that goes. Funny, the other guy I was working with today went right to the foreman.

I read about a guy who lived by a Jello factory once. He said the air was either putrid with [pig products] used to make the gelatin, or sickening sweet from the sugar and flavors. I think I'd move. And only sell my house when it was raining.

Johnny how'd you get that big car into that thin package? You could have done that when you bought it and wouldn't have had trouble with the guy who delivered it.

Jamesbo I don't mind reruns of your stories. I know a lot of people who repeat their stories(I'm on that list). However, you're one of the few who's stories stay the same.

Went out after work and got Tiger some flea medicine. He got into some playing in Mom's yard. There's hardly any grass and it's mostly sand. Gee, go figure in Florida. I got some spray while we were there and it did a good job, but this will ensure that any residual critters will be taken care of. Also got my ears lowered. See what happens when I don't sit down after work?

Okay, gonna rustle up something for dinner. Hope everyone has a good evening.

Good evening guys,
I have to say, one of the best things about this thread is hearing everyone's stories, and their willingness to share about their experiences! I can't begin to count the new things I've learned just reading your posts. Keep em coming!

Sunny, hot, and humid here today. Didn't have anything I had to do outside so I didn't. Pretty slow morning here (pic). The afternoon was much more lively. Got to watch a Bulldog Battle Royale (pic) that went on for about a 1/2-hour. Of course they're just play fighting, but it's fun to watch them get after each other. Our younger female Maggie really holds her own against her older brother.

Momma and I are headed to a lake about an hour south of us on Friday to swim and sun bathe. I'm not much on sunbathing or swimming just to swim, but momma likes it. The place should be very secluded now that school's back in session. There are two car shows with a 1/2-hour drive from me this weekend, one Saturday and one Sunday. I think I'm going to try and make it to one of them if the weather forecast holds. Hope everyone has a great evening!
