Hi guys,
We had our Old's Club's All Oldsmobile Show today. The rain held off until the show was over but I got rained on a little within 5-miles of my house. The car didn't melt, but just enough to be a PIA as far as car clean-up before the next event next weekend. Won a very nice trophy for Best Non-OEM 4-4-2.

Non OEM 442? That's rich. Your car is really close to OEM. I suppose, since it's an Olds chapter, they can be pickier.

My car may look close to OEM on the outside, but under the hood it is far from OEM.

Just saying? I think the category of the award would have been better named if they had called it Modified 4-4-2 or 4-4-2 Street Machine.

I consider that close to OEM. If you can unbolt it and return to stock in an afternoon, it's close to OEM.

Who won the best OEM award in that show, the 67 W-30 with AC?

Yes. It is a well documented W-30 with Automatic tranny and factory A/C.

Chris, there never were any 67 W-30s with air conditioning from the factory. W-30 is not listed in the SPECS book, but the minimum rear axle was 3.55 gearing, which was too steep for the A/C compressor.

John - Are you 100% sure on that? I have always known you could not get A/C on the M/T W-30's, but I have not heard that about the Automatics. The lady that owns this car is an Old's fanatic, she own's six pristine Old's, including three '67's, and she's the OCA Secretary. I swear today she told me the A/C unit was factory. Maybe I misunderstood or heard her wrong???

John - I found this thread (link below) here on CO pertaining to this subject.
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...estions-13903/

Either I heard the lady wrong, or she's just full of $hit. Apparently there were 502 factory produced W-30s built in 1967, none of which had A/C or power brakes. I have definitely gotten schooled, thanks!

Kenneth - No apostrophes just for you!

For W-30, from 66 to 72, C60 Air Conditioning was only available in 70 and 71, on cars with M40 transmission (that's turbo hydramatic 400), JL2, which is power disc brakes, and G91 Axle, which was 3.23 ratio rear differential. The phrase under C60 on 70 and 71 is, verbatim, "Available with W30 only with M40, G91, and JL2." This is primarily to avoid chucking the compressor belt or overspeeding it.

The other issue can be seen under the hood. There is very little room for the OAI hose used on 66-69 W-30 to get from the front to the air cleaner past the a/c compressor. The only Olds to do that, factory authorized, was the 68 H/O with A/C, and THOSE cars got 3.08 rears if they had A/C. The 69 H/O, incidentally, went OAI through the hood a year before the 442s did, possibly to avoid the hose clearance issue.

There's at least one more show this season that I know I'll see her at, and believe me she's gonna get an earful from me. Or, maybe I just heard her wrong? I'll give her the benefit of the doubt unless she starts blowing smoke up my ****, then all bets are off.

Chris - I thought same as what John is describing regarding AC on this W-30 when I saw the image on your car show link. I don't have the expertise in determining what was available, rear-end sizing, engine accommodations, etc. as John, but I was very suspect when I saw the billboard in front of this car. To my point - I don't think you misunderstood anything she told you since it is blatantly stated on the billboard.

Norm, glad there's not much damage. Chris congrats on the award, I was thinking of you last night as we ate a Home run pizza- yumm.... Well yesterday I got our stinky 2019 Acadia unstunk, finally. I was loading up a gallon of milk at store and bag ripped smashing plastic jug on parking lot. Appeared OK but had cracked. Put on floor in car. When returned home, found jug had leaked on floor. Took out carpet mat and cleaned with hose. Carpet on floor didn't seem wet. Next day we loaded up neighbors to go to dinner- yep car reeked... spoiled milk. How embarrassing!! So took both seats out of right side of car separated jute padding from carpet. Put jute in sink and soaked in a cleaning solution. Cleaned carpet on top and bottom. Dried out with fan. left jute pads in sun to dry. couldn't get smell out of jute. After they were dry I left them on ground and Buddy rolled on them- Yep stinky. So threw away the jute in trash can- next morning went to barn after car inside it with fan running and whole shop stunk from pads in trash can! Borrowed one of those Ozone producer machines and left running in car. Put back together without jute pad and car smells good after sitting in sun. WOW what a PIA!! I could see people just replacing carpet or seat after a milk spill... I wonder if people claim that on their car insurance? I'm tellin ya you can't stand the smell it is gross!!

Greg, When my fathers freezer went TU [he was out of town]. I was told to fill it with wadded up newspapers to absorb the odor. Worked really well

Greg - What a total PITA. Two things: (1) Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate) absorbs odors. Sprinkle heavily on fabric, let set for a couple days and vacuum; (2) A White Onion (not Yellow Sweet or Red) will neutralize odors. This is the result of unique bioflavenoids, such as Quercitin, Kaempferol, and Cepalin; metalloproteinases; and thiosulfates found in white onions. It's primarily the thiosulfates which neutralize odors. No, it isn't an old wives tale - it actually works. Chop up one or two large white onions place in a pan or aluminum foil and set in the car. Chopping up the onion increases the surface area of the compounds & provides better neutralizing. NOTE: These compounds do not absorb the smell, they neutralize the smell. After several days you'll most likely notice a significant difference in the smell inside the car - remove the onions. There is a very specific reason your eyes burn when you cut up an onion - this is not a wives tale, onions (in particular a white onion) release very specific compounds - think about it, if they did not they sure wouldn't burn your eyes.

EDIT: I'll point out what may or may not be obvious in my statements above. (1) Sodium bicarbonate absorbs odors because it absorbs moisture. Odors are released (milk in this case) into air, odors are trapped in the moisture content of the air - that's essentially how sodium bicarbonate absorbs the odors - it absorbs the moisture content in the air; (2) Certain bioflavenoids, but in particular thiosulfates, neutralize odors, they do not absorb odors. In Jim's case (above) the paper absorbs any moisture in the TU freezer - removing the moisture laden odor.

Dead freezers are bad. My friend had his die, they duct taped it shut and hauled it loaded to the dump. I have a freezer about 18 years old, and one the same size that is 2 years old. As I eat through my stores, I plan to offline the old freezer and keep for only sporadic use.

Greg - Man that spilt milk mess sounds like a gross nightmare. Glad you were finally able to get the smell out.

Thanks for the congrats on the award. It's always nice to have your car recognized, especially by fellow Old's owners. Glad you and your wife are still enjoying the Home Run pizzas. I eat one almost every week. Which one is your favorite? Mine is the Meat Lovers, I really like the bacon on it. Hope you guys are doing well!

Well 09 truck sold yesterday. $4000. Took it up town to the lot everyone sells stuff at. Cost me 2 30 packs of Busch Light to owner of lot. ($50.) Pretty strange, I was waiting for wife to pick me up and putting on for sale sign, etc, when buyers stopped, took for a drive and bought it. Good riddance- Never again- my days of flipping late model stuff is over. (well if 15 years old is late model). What a relief.

That's why my short comment. John followed up with facts regarding W30's and a/c. Got an estimate to get a dead tree, japenese yews, and other **** cleared from my back yard. $2k. They'll fit me into their schedule. The Hyundai finally goes into the body shop on Monday, three months after making the appointment. Hopefully they don't screw it up.

Dan - You're just full of good news, that clearing estimate sounds high, but I guess it depends on how much $hit they're cutting down and hauling off.

My rant for the day is insurance, I have my daily driver autos coming due in October, and my home due in early November. I have them both bundled with "The Hartford" and they want to raise them both substantially, even though I've had no tickets, accidents, or claims on either policy! These frickin natural disasters are causing everyone to suffer in the insurance market. What a frickin racket, guess I'll be playing the shop around game which sucks!

When insurance companies start pulling that B.S. I often think it's because those at the top of the food chain (very>extremely wealthy) are lying & taking large payouts which then gets pushed down the food chain to us grunts to pay more by increasing premiums

I don't doubt in the least that what you've suggested is partially to blame for the increased rates. I asked to speak to a Supervisor on the phone at the Hartford today and I asked her why both my Auto and Home Owners rates were increasing so dramatically. All she could say was she had worked for them for 15-years and this year was the largest rate hike she had seen since she has been there. She offered no explanation as to why, and said she could not do any better on the rates other than me taking higher deductibles. I already have a $2K deductible on my Home Owner's Policy. Even with me raising the deductible to $5K, was only going to lower the cost $150, when they were jacking the annual premium up from $1,700 to $2,300 annually. Thanks but no thanks. As far as I'm concerned they're common criminals!

Just MHO but the more an insurance company advertises..................the worse it is I have used Chubb for years expensive but a great company.. Unfortunately agents are much like doctors, you have to be your own and examine your insurance situation often to see what makes good sense and what needs to change. A few years ago I found myself paying on a policy where the deductible was more than the truck was worth

If you want, let me know- here or PM. If not I understand. I think our cars were pretty similar in condition, etc. I plan to sell car at some point before I am 75 or so. is that scottish or sumtin'? Chris, my agent just switched my insurance over to Citizens (Hanover), because both my car and homeowners policy were set to increase. It seems to never end with the rate hikes.
