This hurts.
This justifies your purchase of a $20 fire extinguisher for each of your old cars.

I've known this car for years. It belonged to an elderly neighbor lady and I washed it and took it in for service for her many times. Present owner bought it from her estate and had maintained it nicely until now.
The way the interior's burned, makes you think wiring like Jamesbo's Hurst. But I wouldn't hesitate to bet ethanol-laced fuel might have contributed.

Want to bet that most don't have a FE in their car? If you do, the best one is a CO2 because it does the job and doesn't contaminate any harnesses it touches. Course a fire doesn't discriminate on burning wires so it's really the owners call.
Don't forget: FE's must be checked and recertified periodically. Check your local fire codes for those dates. I believe refills are every 3 years, and tank recert is every 6.

I can relate to that. My 78 VW beetle caught fire in the engine bay while I was driving. By a stroke of luck it had been raining the day before, and there was a ditch beside the road. A good samaritan stopped and used his lunch cooler as a bucket to scoop up water and put the fire out. The car was saved. I was VERY lucky.
I do carry a fire extinguisher now, and when working with fuel lines etc. I put a lot more thought into safety.

I have a FE in the back passenger floorboard of my car. I get the odd look when friends see it but I am not taking any chances. I also disconnect the battery when I know I won't be driving it for a while.
