Horsepower #s

I got an email from my builder today and he said my small block put down 388 ft lbs of torque and 347 hp @ 5100 rpm on his dyno. The motor has Edelbrock heads, cam, intake, msd, headers, Holley. Stock bottom end. What do you guys think?

I think that's good for a low 13 if this was a rear wheel dyno pull.
Great job.

Did you get a torque and hp curve printout?

I wonder what it does spinning 6500

The motor was on an engine dyno. These are not RWHP #s. I'll get a sheet on it by the end of the week. Jer, you rode in the car. It ran well I thought. As far as 6500. It'll never see that rpm. I'm too afraid of breaking it (again). Thank goodness I have the lightest of the Cutlasses. The S.

Did you have any fitment problems with the edelbrock heads on your small block? Others have posted problems with the mechanical fuel pump and header fit. Just curious

I am the guy to talk to about NOT putting E heads on a small block. We had to cut the head to fit the pump and weld it. Everything works fine, now. So yes, there is a HUGE fitment problem putting these heads on a small block. It should not be done. You can see by my power #s the heads aren't worth it. My experienced 2 cents.

Are you coming to the Olds powered nationals in September at Byron?

So what about the numbers? What do you guys think? Are these respectable? It reminds me of a chebby 350/350.

As far as Byron I think I would embarrass myself. The car is fun to drive but I bet it can't get out of it's own way. Can I bring my buddy Chet? He's the guy you met Jer. He's running a Pro Mod. It runs low 4's in the 1000. Blown hemi on alcohol. I love being in his pit crew. I don't do a thing but watch. Being on the start line with that car is too much!

That car is too pretty to embarass yourself in. I'll bet everyone loves it.
I spectated last year because I was leaking a little oil.

Heck, I'll probably be spectating day 2 again this year. I usually blow something up just in time to lose a race.

There were so few entries last year, that BigJerr's wife had to enter the trophy class with her Fwd grocery getter. She took home the trophy too I believe.

It's going to be Buick, Olds and Pontiac this year because there weren't enough Oldsmobile showings to justify the 2 day track rental.

Chet was a nice guy, and does nice work. I'll bet his car is a blast.

As far as the motor goes, It's a heck of a lot better than stock. I'm thinking those big chambered heads might be killing your compression though. There's a LOT of fun with that manual trans to be had.

Assuming it could get that high, a lot less than 347.

So, no comment on the #s ? I have had much more powerful but less fun to drive cars than this one. For a small block, how does this thing measure up? Norm, you know more than anybody in the world about these engines. So are the power #s junk? I wish it had more power but I have to be realistic.

What kind of numbers did you expect? They seem pretty good to me for a 350. I think you may need to gear up the car and get the bugs worked out. I remember putting a 4.10 12 bolt posi in a 70 Cutlass with a 350 and it turned into a real sleeper except on the highway. With 347hp the car should have some potential to run in the 13's as stated before, providing your set up for the drag strip. If it were mine I would run some steep gears probably 373's and find a overdrive tranny.

Yep. 12 Bolt with 3.73s. Before I put that rearend on it it didn't run for sh*t. It woke up nicely though. The builder thinks the #s are OK, so I'm Ok with them too. He liked the torque of the Olds vs Chebby. Said they didn't get torque out of the SBC like they do out of the Olds.
