A heads-up for 2017 and newer GM owners

If you have a 17 or newer GM vehicle and want to get an additional transponder key, you now need two learned keys to program another.
So if you have two keys, as most do, and lose one, you can't just get a new key and do the quick self program. You now need a scan tool (possibly GM only) to get the vehicle into program mode.
Worse yet, if you lose all keys you can no longer do the 30 minute self program, now you add a tow to the service charge.
If I had a new vehicle, I'd have three transponder keys.

Interesting to know... As I will soon be purchasing another new GM vehicle, I will have the dealer include a third, possibly even a forth spare key as part of the sale...

The same goes for my 2004 marauder, you need two previous programmed keys to program a third, maybe just Ford has been like that for a while.

A lot of the foreign cars have been like that for a few years I believe. I remember running into this when selling Hyundais.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a 17 Silverado. I have really good luck with keys. Never lost them or the transmitters yet.

So other makes have been doing this for a while. Actually I'm surprised it took GM this long, because it makes total sense, as it would fairly easy for anyone you left your car with to make and program a key.
I've had a few customers who were inconvenienced (and upset) by this in the last few months, so I thought I'd put it out there.
