Growing up in the 60's

1st four are Yogi Berra
Next 5 are from Casey Stengel
Next 2 are from Gabby Hayes
Next of course is Clay/ Ali
And the last two were from the one and only Dizzy Dean Who rumor has it was removed from announcing the "Saturday Game of the Week" because of teachers complaining about his poor English. He also sang the Wabash Cannonball during the 7th inning stretch.

The other night on the radio, I heard the Statler Brothers song "Do You Remember". For some reason it reminded me of this post... (I also realized I have the LP with it...)
So here it is! DO YOU remember???
(BTW, Olds content is in the last group... )
Saturday morning serials chapters 1 through 15,
Fly paper, penny loafers, Lucky Strike Green.
Flat tops, sock hops, Studebaker, Pepsi Please,
Ahh, do you remember these?
Cigar Bands, on your hand, your daddy's socks rolled down.
Sticks, snow floats and aviator caps with flaps that button down.
Movie stars on Dixie Cup tops, and knickers to your knees,
Ahh, do you remember these?
The Hit Parade, grape Tru-Aid, The Sadie Hawkins Dance,
Pedal pushers, duck tail hair and peggin' your pants.
Howdie-Doodie, Tutti-Frutti, the seam up the back of her hose,
Ahh, do you remember those?
James Dean, he was keen, Sunday movies were taboo,
The Senior Prom, Judy's mom, Rock-n-Roll was new.
Cracker Jack prize, stars in your eyes, as Daddy tore the keys,
Ahh, do you remember these?
The boogey man, lemonade stands, takin' your tonsils out,
Hindenburg, -n- wait your turn, and 4 foul ***** you're out.
Cigarette loads, -n- secret codes, -n- savin' lucky stars,
Can you remember back that far?
The boat neck shirts, and fender skirts and crinoline petticoats,
Mum's the word, and a dirty bird and a double root beer float.
Moon hub caps, and loud heel taps, and he's a real gone cat.
Ahh, do you remember that?
Dancin' close, little moron jokes, and cooties in her hair,
Captain Midnight, Ovaltine, and The Whip at the County Fair.
Charles Atlas Course, Roy Roger's Horse, and "only The Shadow knows"
Ahh, do you remember those?
Gable's charm, Frog in your arm, loud mufflers, pitchin' woo,
Going steady, Veronica and Betty, white bucks, and "Blue Suede Shoes"
Knock Knock jokes, and "Who's there?", Dewey, Dewey who?;
Do we, do we remember these? Yes, we do, Ahh do we do we remember these?
So here it is! DO YOU remember???

I am afraid what we have here is "Failure to communicate"
By making [asking] you to start it, it turned my knock knock joke into your knock knock joke. Get it?
Normally the person who is delivering the joke starts it no the other way round.

No we don't.
I soon realized your intentions after I started it, so I had quickly came up with a KILLER ending for it, hoping to use it...
Just think - the audience must be in deep suspense about now!

YOU!
GIMME YOUR MONEY NOW AND NOONE GETS HURT!!!
<two 44's drawn and firing into the ground like Yosemite Sam's>
THE COPPERS WILL NEVER GIT ME, YA HEAR????
<me running away with your cash, guns still shooting into the air>
You have just been ROBbed.
You are now poor and scared half to death. I get away with a load of cash cause it was payday.
---I was wondering who would end up being the victim!
Fortunately, I refrain from using this one at the childrens' parties...

To continue my favorite thread and to add some levity to the incessant arguring over cams and compression.
I thought I would offer up yet another 60's quiz
Name the 60’s TV show
1) After finding “liquid gold” they owned a “cement pond”.
2) 86 & 99 worked for CONTROL.
3) At the end of each episode of this show, the main actor stepped out of character to ask for the viewers help in capturing a wanted criminal.
4) Few of Darrin’s in-laws called him by his name…the worst offender being his mother-in-law, Endora.
5) Major Nelsen found her on the beach.
6) She was a busybody maid who pretty much ran the household.
7) “Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!”
8) Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo and Betty Jo
9) All about Ann Marie and her adventures in the big city.
10) Marilyn was considered the ugly member of the family.

1) Beverly Hillbillies- and it was "black gold, Texas tea". Now, what did the Clampetts drive?
2) Get Smart
3) Think it was Dragnet... Might have been "The Fugitive"
4) Bewitched. With the gorgeous Elizabeth Montgomery. Plus you got to drool over all them new Chevrolets!
5) Jeannie, as in "I Dream of Jeannie". Barbara Eden is still hot.
6) Hazel. You got to drool over all the new Fords here. Shirley Booth was a consummate actress who could play any part.
7) Lost in Space
8) "Lots of curves, you bet, 'n' even more when you get to the Junction. Petticoat Junction"
9) "That Girl". Marlo Thomas is 70 and still luscious.
10) "The Munsters". The first TV series to have a custom built family car, by Barris no less. I built both the Munster Koach and the Drag-u-la when I was in about 5th grade. I liked the 1st season theme music better.

In 68 Jethro built a Hotrod and built his own version of the Olds with a 442 engine
Don't mess with someone who scheduled his college classes around The Beverly Hillbillies and Hollywood Squares!
And the answer is "Donkey Fazoo"

Re Hollywood Squares:
People used to say my Mama looked a little like Rose Marie (she did actually) and it would **** her off to no end because she thought Rose Marie was a smartass on Hollywood Squares. Never mind she watched it religiously and howled at some of the responses. You'd see her sitting in her chair smirking, then shaking, the she'd let loose with a belly laugh. My Mama could also be a smartass when she was so inclined.
Mama also resembled Patricia Neal. She didn't mind that comparison, and Hud was one of her favorite movies along with the Waltons pilot The Homecoming.

Yes, I love her. Did you know she kept a bow in her square and always wore it in her hair on every show for some reason.
Q. As you grow older, do you tend to gesture more or less with your hands while talking?
Rose Marie: You ask me one more growing old question Peter, and I'll give you a gesture you'll never forget.

I don't know what reminded me of this today. I remember them well. The cases were sort of tilted in[stacked at an angle] so they would not fall out. But they were open, I mean they were there for the taking.
Only, But back then............. nobody took them.

What happened to the picture???!!!
#186
I just finished watching Elinor Donahue on Star Treck "Metamorphosis" 1967
Remember her from 50-60's TV Show "Father knows Best" and later in movie with Julie Roberts, "Pretty Woman?"
The other night I was shocked to find out Arthur Boo Radley ["To Kill a Mocking Bird"-1962] was played by none other than a very young Robert Duvall.
The same Robert Duvall who in "Apocalypse Now"-1979 gave us that famous quote "I love the smell of Napham in the morning................smelled like Victory."

the 60's
I was born in 1949 [no clementine jokes please]. I bought my first car in 1965- a beutiful 1959 oldsmobile dynamic 88 senic coupe-white with red interior. My dad told me I had to buy it instead of the 57 thunderbird that I had my eye on for the same price because I had to haul my brothers to work after school every day. I drove it the way it was for 2 years then took it to a mechanic in a small town that was recommended for hopping up cars. Bored out the motor and put a 3/4 isky cam in it and then my dad tried constantly to let him tune it up as it didn't sound right to him. Must have been that whump whump sound at the exhaust. Anyway I found that there was not a patrol car anywhere at that time that could catch it and had some fun then. I kept that car for years and finally the salt on the Iowa roads killed the body and frame but that was the best car that I have ever owned to this day and that is also why I am still going to buy another one and rebuild it. Enjoy your Olds to the max!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jamesbo,
You're too much. You guys will like this link to a 60's presentation that my sister sent me the other day. Will last about 9 minutes. Warning: Don't click on unless you have broadband. There's more good stuff on the main contents page too (www.objflicks.com). Enjoy.

On a lighter note,
A friend of mine woke up one morning and went down stairs where he saw his son watching this on TV.
He asked his son, "Why are you watching that?"
His son replied, "Becuase there's nothing else on."
Only us Ole Olds guys remember these I'm sure.

They would play the national anthem with a pic of the flag or fighter jets flying around right just before they signed off and the test pattern came on with it's accompanying high pitched whine.
Really late after that went down and the screen was just white with static the ant races started.
Who said there were no video games in the 50's and 60's?

It was a rude wake up call when that stupid tone went off after falling asleep with the tube on...
Which reminds me - how long will people call the TV the "tube"?
I do not think any TVs are still made with CRTs! The "LCD"? The "panel"? Hmm..

We have come full circle. Our first TV had a 6" screen and half the time all we got was the test pattern. Now the manufactures make 6" and smaller screens (wrist watch size) and there is nothing on TV. Make me kind of miss the test pattern.

I'm a youngster by definition, a child of the eighties but i was blessed with a dad that let me grow up around a pair of 70 chevelle SS's, a 66 mustang GT, a 78 gto, a 69 442, a 70 cuda, and of course the old chevy van with a blown 350. Those days were spent waking up early to go help my old man do some body work or tune up the cars, while it was no where near the 60's thinking about it makes me think of a simpler time when if you wanted your car to be loud fast and unique you got dirty and killed a whole weekend doing it YOURSELF. I always ask my dad what it was like when he was growing up around homebuilt rods and true muscle cars. I can only imagine and be truley thankful that he grew up and shared with me his "old school" ways of fixing up a car yourself. That appreciation is making my olds project that much more special to me, and that much more sentimental when my kids wake up and start wrenching with me. People like my dad and all of you are keeping family memories and REAL cars on the road.

I grew up in the 60s, but my dad was not an Oldsmobile man, nor was he a GM man, but otherwise he was a pretty good guy. He was RCAF, and came back to Canada from Germany with a wife, baby (me) and a Mercedes (still trying to find out the model). After realizing that he was only rich by German standards (50s), he dumped the Mercedes, and drove a series of VW bugs. Got a red Rambler wagon in 62? (it was okay for your kid to play in the back while driving in those days), then a white 65 Fury I 4-door with blue interior (seatbelts, what seatbelts; oh, and apparently smoking in the car on long trips with your kids, with the windows up was okay too). Next up was a 69 Thunderbird with a 429, then a 76 Volvo (that I eventually got for free). These are the cars I grew up in.
Anyone else remember those smokey drives in the 60s? 70s too I guess.

I can remember being in a "nursery" at Ramstien AFB while my parents went out for the night. It was a refurbished Quanset Hut with two rows of bunk beds in the back half, a play area in the middle, and the attendant's desk near the front door. After "night time" whenever that was, the attendant would turn the lights down and sit at the desk reading and smoking. I can still remember the smell of the cigarette smoke and see the image of the attendant at the desk. My father's family car was a station wagon, I think a 1958 Ford and I can remember riding in the very back listening to the drone of the bias ply tires on the German blacktop as we drove home late in the evenings trying to fall back asleep. This was maybe 1962

Although my Father quit smoking when he was 80
As a small child I would sit in his lap as he blew smoke rings and I would stick my finger through them.
I guess after years of watching him, In High School, I could also blow perfect smoke rings that would gently descend, while slowly expanding and circle my dates [fill in the blank]
[think ring toss here guys]
Now I want a smoke
Where's my Zippo
