When reinstalling front coil springs on my 69 Cutlass vert is there a top and bottom to the springs.
On a flat surface one end of the spring is level and the spring stands evenly, When flipped over the spring stands cockeyed. Which way do they go in ?
When the spring is in is the correct position for it to be rotated until the end of the bottom coil aligns with the hole in the lower a frame ?
They do go in a certain way, the flat end goes up, the end with the pigtail goes downward, if you look at the seat for the spring on the lower control arm you will see an "indent" where the pigtail fits / sits.
And yes, end of pig tail should be at center of witness hole (or close). I read in the 68 assembly manual that one of the front springs is supposed to be slightly longer than the other. So you might compare and put the longer one on the appropriate side. I don’t recall the which side it is, but probably driver side to compensate for left rear squat?
You can't trust these assembly manuals, i.e. they say the '68-'69 400 pistons are flat tops, but are really slightly dished. So, maybe this isn't correct, but it is from the assembly manual. It does say that they used low rate (slightly shorter) on RH side, identified by circle around letter code tape tag.
As for the drain hole, yes, it does also serve as a drain hole. But, it is also used to index the spring.
