Cleaning/Painting undercarriage

I recently purchased a 55 Olds 88 that I believe has spent a good number of years in a structure with a combo wood & dirt floor. The entire under carriage has a healthy coating of surface rust. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on best way to provide a good thorough cleaning and then what topical coating would the Olds have come with when new? and or recommendations for a coating. Suggestions or shared experiences much appreciated. Dennis

Liberal application of naval jelly should remove "surface rust." I would be highly surprised if the finish on that era Oldsmobile was anything other that semi-gloss black?
