front coil springs

How can I tell what springs I have under the front of my car? I know the PO changed them, but car rides to high. when I checked the front both springs are in there perch, but are bowed to the outside and almost hit the shocks!! I needed to change the upper and lower ball joints and that's when I noticed something wrong. springs are 16 1/2 " long and 4 3/4 " round and have 11 coils.

I wouldn't worry too much about identifying what they are. Determine how high you want the front to sit relative to the factory height per the CSM, then get springs to achieve that height.

Do you think cutting a coil or two out, may let them set straight in the perch, so shock is in middle of spring, and not so much to one side?

The springs in your car are identical to the OEM ones in my 72 Cutlass S. If your car is sitting too high there's got to be some other reason. Did you have the control arms out and torque them back when the car was off the ground?

The Po put all that back together. But I'm still scratching my head , why did he powder coat the frame, but not replace the upper, and lower ball joints! When I removed the spring ( only pass side right now). The upper and lower A-arms moved very freely, not tight at all, I will re-torque them, when I put it back together. I looked up what paper work the Po gave me, and the receipt for springs has Moog 5380 is this right?

The catalog data I have archived shows Moog 5380 as the correct application for a 1970 Cutlass convertible, 455 engine (excluding 442), with AC.

Some, but probably not much. The real difference is in the various spring rates, load ratings, and installed heights.

If you want the front lower, decide how much lower then look for pics and/or measurements of cars with specific springs.

Here's my car with Moog 5536 front springs from the wheel and tire size sticky:

Just a thought. Had you considered these springs might be HD (or have been sourced by the PO for a convertible instead of HT) and have a stiffer spring rate? If that's the case you might find the ride somewhat harsh even with the reduced ride height. If that's the case and it doesn't suit your liking, source out replacement springs of your choice. I like the selection at RA.

Allen thanks for your responds . That is along my line of thinking, These where new springs, and the car was just to high, so I thought cut them down see how they work, if I didn't like the ride , I would buy the right ones. and if I did like the ride, I would save a little money! I figured I wasn't out anything if it works, just a little of my time.

I agree that it's worth a shot. If it doesn't, look at the spring rates on the ones you're considering to make sure they will have the right compression for height and ride. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

I've been reading this thread and others and am experiencing a similar high ride height on my 69 Cutlass vert.
Looking in the CSM on page 3-18 fig 3-58 and 3-59 I'm look for ride height data for convertible and don't see it.

So what is the correct factory ride height for 69 Cutlass vert ?
