Project Car 1971 442 455 4 spd Bench Seat Viking Blue $5,500

Hey Everybody
This car is in a town a few hours North of me. I've been drooling over it but decided I need to pass on it. But I wanted to help the owner sell it so I'm creating this thread for her. What she shared with me is that her father started restoring this car, then he passed away. Her husband was going to finish it and did some work to it, then they got divorced. So this car is sitting in a garage waiting for a Oldsmobile person to come along and finish it!

Here's what she told me was done to it:

Frame removed, sandblasted and painted, re-installed
Engine rebuilt (she has receipts)
Transmission rebuilt (paperwork lost)
Posi rear added (no paperwork, unsure what year/model of rear end) She found the numbers 407296 on the housing

OK, from information she gave me I've also concluded the engine has the correct vin number stamped in the block, but it has 1970 E casting heads.

She copied the casting number from the side of the transmission and it's 392566 which would be correct for a 1971 Muncie. But I don't know if it has the correct vin number stamped in it.

Vin number correct for a 442, it's 344871Z106666 The Craigslist ad says 454 but it is a 455 Olds motor, you can see the photos of it when you click on the link at the bottom of this thread.

Here's what she copied off the trim tag:

Body by fisher
ST 71-34487 Z 00361 BOY
TR 943 B80 26 26 PNT
O1A 033806 460506

There is some rust, but the only holes through are in the rear quarter panels near the wheel wells. The vinyl top was removed and some of the paint was sanded down, so those areas now have surface rust. There was rust around the front and back windshields, but she described that as surface rust not holes rotted through.

One of the grill panels is broken, the other is good. The front windshield is broken but the back is there. The door glass has been dropped into the doors, unsure if all the hardware is there. It has a front bumper, I'll ask her about the rear and if it has cutouts. Lots of parts in the trunk and inside the car, she doesn't know for sure what is or isn't there.

Here's a few pictures she sent me. If you want to see any specific views please reply to this message and I'll try to get them for you.

Help selling this car

OK, There's been over 200 views but no replies yet. I've asked for more pictures to add to this thread, but help me out guys. What advice would you give Melissa to help sell this car? I've shared some of my thoughts with her but am asking you to provide your comments too. Lets help get this car out of her mothers garage and into someone's who will finish restoring it.

If I didn't have one already I'd be interested. It would be nice to see the lower part of the car, the floor and the trunk floor. I just drove 100 miles to look at a car that I was told "clean and rust free" and it wasn't. Like Oldzy mentioned before, I don't think she'll get many lookers with the pics she has on craigslist and here.

$7000 is way too much for a flat hood 71 442 needing a total restoration. In this market the only thing that's going to move it is a lower price. I know there's probably upwards of $7000 into the car but a motor that was re-built with no warranty is just taking a chance. No one's going to give you the full value of it.

She should be able to move it for between $4000 & $5000 assuming it's solid

Basket case cars are super tough to sell in our current market. She is just going to have to keep dropping the price or be prepared to sit on it until the right buyer comes along.

A few months ago I absolutly stole a 85 Camaro race car roller with about $4000.00 in brand new parts. I have tried to resale at a small profit for about a month and have not been able to get a nibble. I finally parted the car out and will get my money back and make a few bucks but I put in a lot of work getting anything out of it. A couple years ago a deal like that would have been a home run just tossing on EBAY without any effort. The market is sooooooooooooft right now.
