1978 Olds 442 Factory 5-speed!

I'm selling my 1978 Oldsmobile 442. The car is 2-tone- Silver Metallic upper and Black lower with Black vinyl interior. The car has is original Olds 260 V8 2bbl, rare Borg Warner T-50 5-speed manual trans, and 2.56 posi rear. The car has bucket seats, gauge package, AC, AM/FM cassette radio. Originally a San Antonio, Texas car. It's always been garaged since I bought it in June 2003. The car needs a restoration. It's partially disassembled (the interior and glass are out) but I have every piece except the carpet. The sheet metal is in excellent condition except for the front floors. They'll need to be replaced. Replaced the clutch, fuel pump, and had carb rebuilt (all in 2003). Car runs good. Solid! I take it out of the garage 2-3 times a month and run it in the driveway. Was hoping to restore it but realize I'll never get to it. Wrote to GM Heritage Center back in 2003 and they said there were about 10 442's in 1978 built with the 5-speed. I have 70+ more pictures of the car than what's listed here. Also there are 2 videos on YouTube (search 1978 Olds 442) by Mary C. Own a rare and unusual piece of Oldsmobile history!
Have the build sheet and some paperwork from original owner.
$2000 firm.
Phil

I'm sorry but I'm not looking for any trades. My wife and I have 4 Oldsmobiles and we are looking to downsize. Plus, we only have a 2-car garage. Her 1979 Hurst/Olds and the 1978 442 occupy those spaces while my 1978 Calais 4-speed and my modified 1979 Hurst are under covers in the driveway. Once the cars sell, I can concentrate on my 1979 Hurst. I've owned it 20 years and it now needs to be restored. The aluminum-headed 455 will come out and I'll swap in an LS motor and OD trans to make it a better cruiser. 3.73 gears and no OD make it barely tolerable for longer trips.

Here are a few more pictures of the car. I also have some of the dealer literature that will go with the car including the dealer album and assembly manual. If you look at the pictures of the 1978 dealer brochure you can see that they show a 1978 442 with the 5-speed installation. My interior is identical to this picture.

I live in Massachusetts. The car was ordered by Cavender Oldsmobile in San Antonio, Texas and was purchased by a customer there. It was there until I got it off the original owner in 2003.

Wish you were closer, I sold my 78 442 that was a factory 4 speed. Black and gold with excellent black bucket interior. It went to Chicago five or six years ago. Hope it is still around. I love the Salon body style. Great highway cruisers, very quiet.

I love the car, for the cash for the car but short on shipping. Bet shipping is almost as much as your asking for car, from mass to colorado. Will do some investigating and will let you know

I think the shipping would depend on the options you choose. Since the car is partially disassembled, you'd want to use an enclosed trailer. I still have the paperwork from when I had it shipped up here to Mass back in June 2003. Shipping was $600 but I was able to have it loaded on the bottom rack of an open carrier. I'm sure the prices have changed since then... My 1978 Calais 4-speed (that is also for sale) came up from Jacksonville, Florida in Aug 2012 and that cost $625. Again, an open carrier. I was surprised by that one because the company told me it would take 5-6 days for it to arrive and it was here in just under 2 DAYS! I think the driver must have driven from Florida straight through with very few stops!

Neat car and I'm sure a steal at $2k. I remember these cars well. Sure is something what the 442 became in the end. Would this car actually be a 251? (2bbl,5 speed, single exhaust)?? Just joking love the car, I hope some one gets it and finishes it because it's a great example of where we were in the late 70's.

Thought I'd post a few more pictures of the car while I wait for another 8-16 inches of snow to fall in my area (to add to the 11 inches that fell Wed night and 4 inches on Fri night.) Picture 2 shows the driver's floorpan. You can still see the Texas inspection stickers (2003-4) on the windshield in picture 4.

Better pictures of the front floors of the car, 1 an 2. Picture 3 shows a good sized trunk although a small lid opening (compared to a Supreme or Calais). The fastback design was not a hatchback. It just looked like one. This was the ONLY bodystyle that the 442 was available on in 1978 and 79, and probably explains the low production totals - 2,518 cars in 1978 and only 630 cars in 1979!

I'm starting the reassembly process of the car this upcoming week as time allows. (It was suggested that I do so by several people.) It should be an easy project since everything was labeled, bagged, or tagged when I took it apart. I took pictures and notes, too. I will post some new pictures when the car is fully assembled.
