1978 Cutlass Calais 4-speed for sale

I am selling my 1978 Cutlass Calais. It has its original Chevy 305 V8 2bbl, rare factory Saginaw 4-speed, and 2.73 open rear end. The car has 149K miles and runs good. It is red with black stripes on the hood and trunk. The interior is red vinyl with black inserts. The previous owner had changed the cosmetics prior to me purchasing the car in August 2012. I had the clutch replaced, complete brake job front and rear, tune-up, muffler and tailpipe done. The car is a good driver. Fun car! I've put on 13K miles since I've owned it. Still needs some work. It gives a puff of blue smoke on start-up but does not constantly burn oil (valve seals?). It has AC that doesn't blow cold. The radio part of the AM/FM CB works great along with the power antenna, but the CB does not work. The gauges work sometimes and then other times they don't. The driver's seat doesn't recline. I have recent pictures of it that can be e-mailed, plus I have 2 videos of it on YouTube. Search YouTube for 1978 Cutlass 4 speed and look for author Mary C. Our cheap camera has poor sound quality. The car sounds better than in the video. I'm located in Leominster, MA which is 40 miles west of Boston or 20 miles north of Worcester. Looking for $4200/BO. Rare car! Phil

I love it!! Damn, that would be perfect for the 455 engine im pulling from a 1970 98. I have No budget though now. I will be looking for a car like that down the road a couple years and I know I wont find one. Oh well.

Took the car out to run some local errands today. Also, I took a few more pictures. The weather is bright and sunny and a little chilly, only 28 degrees.

Only if you want to modify the wiring, the exhaust, and probably the transmission.

You'd be better off dropping a BBC into it.

The CB not working is a deal-breaker, though.

What happened to the Calais front sheet metal? The front sheet metal and grills are Cutlass Supreme.

I have owned 2 of these cars and both have had the same header panel. I've posted a close-up picture of my Calais grille and also that of a 1978 Cutlass Supreme. They look similar at a quick glance. The 78 Calais has evenly spaced thick vertical ribs while the 78 Supreme has thin ribs within 3 "segmented" sections.

Phil's Grills are the real deal. That style grille on his car was 1 year only for the 1978 Calais. In 1979 Olds went to the egg crate style for the Calais (my H/O photo at left depicts one of these). As for the CB, it can easily be replaced with another one, there's several on e-bay at the moment.

56 degrees and sunny the last 2 days! Unseasonably warm. More pictures...
Last picture shows my "fleet" of Oldsmobiles. You can see my 1978 442 5-speed car in the garage. My wife's white 1979 Hurst is for sale also in a different listing. We're downsizing and selling 3 cars- I'm only keeping my black Hurst. I've had it for 20 years now.

I was wondering about this. I was looking for a 4-speed Cutlass and came across this site with the listing. I think I saw it on Gbody forum also but seen it was pending sale. Would love to have one. I missed out on a blue 4-speed 79 in December. Congrats.

Every time I see a listing on craigslist or Ebay for a manual transmission 1978-80 A-body I print it. I've been watching these cars for 15+ years now and have a huge pile of listings. I know I have one for that blue 79 4-speed. I remember even calling on it. It was in Pennsylvania and I believe it had no motor. The price kept dropping until it was down to $1200 or so. Then the ad went away, but a new one popped up in NY with basically the same info. I called the guy in NY about it and he said he wanted $3000 for the car. I hung up with him and called the guy in PA and he told me he sold it to someone in NY. Obviously, the guy in NY was trying to flip it for a big profit. I know it was the same car because it was a blue on blue 79 Calais with the 4-speed, posi rear, and AM/FM CB radio. I doubt there's a bunch of them optioned like that! If you're interested in the car I'd ask if the motor is original and numbers matching. Beware.
