I used to be HEAVILY into the turbobuick community. Joe Cipolla was up to this stuff 10-15 years ago with buicks among other cars... Google his name. He's done it to the buick crowd, the Olds crowd, Camaro guys, etc....

What are Super Stock IV wheels? It is listed on the window sticker. I know the I-III wheels, but do not recall the IV wheel. Is it possible the all chromed SS-1 rim that was used in 1971 for a short time?

My 71 442 from lansing shows the same on the window sticker. A roman numeral 4. I know others like this as well. But my car is a ss1 car with trim rings.

It appears to be the same car, I did ask the person who listed it if this is the same car that had the cowl tag changed and if it had been put back to the one that corresponds to the VIN build date?

I am not surprised I only got crickets for a response.

Too bad this car was a really nice survivor before it was butchered

Numbers matching drivetrain. From the OAI air cleaner to the 253 carb to the H heads and 036 distributor to the open face alternator, 4 original T3 headlights.

The Plot thickens.
The original basket case car was sold by vendor of questionable character to a buyer who consigns it to a respected Pennsylvania restoration shop, sans a few parts, fender well, breather, trim tag.
Shop restores car and displays at MCACN with fresh trim tag, and a block with original vin. Remember the original motor blew up years ago.
At the same time the bogus car is for sale on eBay still in Chicago. Bogus car was a decent 71 442, 4 speed ,Viking blue, ram air hood. What does it take to make bogus car a W30 when you have a broadcast card and a window sticker? Red inners, Heads, intake,carb and distributor and the trim tag to match the broadcast card. Forget the fact your vin predates the trim tag dates by 6 months.
Questions remain, how much of car at Mcacn is original? The engine isn't,the trim tag is not and how n
Much of the body and frame had to be replaced?

Wow, this story is unreal! So Mean Machine's rough W-30 convertible (without the original motor) was the one restored by the PA shop? Or the cloned car out of Chicago was the one restored by the PA shop? Confusing!

So here is an update.
Bogus W30 (but real 442,4 speed) on eBay with trim tag from real W30, gets purchased by a stand up guy,Chicago collector. Stand up guy arranges to return purloined trim tag to rightful current owner of real W30. Real W30 car will be reunited with its original trim tag, owner and resto shop should be happy.
Stand up Chicago guy now owns a real 1971 442,4 speed,Viking blue,with ram air hood. He gets car at a decent price fitted with many rare 1971 W30 parts. This car will be restored by Reputable Pennsylvania shop in its original configuration, a very desirable Viking Blue,white interior and top, 4 speed with Ram air hood. Should easily be worth $100,000 to $125,000 when done.
Sleezebag seller takes a hit on eBay car and totally found out by Olds community.
Moral of this story:
There are way too many knowledgeable Oldsguys out there to pass off a fake.

Great News. Glad someone is reversing the madness. Hopefully the original trim tag of the non-W30 will also reunite with its body.

Which Thornton? They are brothers but each have their own shop. Kinda curious; I remember a debacle at B-J with a red ‘70 W-30 conv. stick that sold, then unwound due to paperwork and sold at a different B-J auction.
