brake booster piston rod

brake booster piston rod
Got a new booster from Right Stuff detailing. It came with 2 different sized piston rods to install. I picked the smaller one that matched the original. At any rate, the piston rod has a stepped end that is inserted into the booster. When I look into the booster there is a hole (I think, it is the back side of the push rod).
Does that stepped end fit into that hole? Or do you just the piston rod in the booster and call it good?
I saw the CSM says there is gauge to use to ensure it stick out far enough or not too far, but that is all I got out of it.

Ok - researched and answered my own question.
Apparently the stepped end (smaller diameter end) is supposed to fit into the hole of the washer in the center of the booster. The "washer" on my booster is off center, so I will need to stick something down there to move it over so the piston rod will fit correctly.
