Powder Coating Calipers?

Hey guys, I just bought some new brake calipers and am looking at getting them powder coated. Only thing is I have to disassemble my brand new calipers. Are they a pain in the rear to disassemble and do I take the risk of ruining them?

There are some very good caliper paints made now.....Dupli-color and Eastwood... I used Eastwood and was very very pleased.....Has been on for a couple of years and will clean up like new

You will most likely need new seals for them as they don't take kindly to being disassembled. Just use brake caliper paint. As Bob said they are very good now.

I've also heard good things about the brake paint. It is reasonably priced too. You can buy it at the local auto parts store.

I would not waste the time to disassemble the calipers either. You will likely ruin the dust seal taking them apart and it is easy to ruin the piston seal when reassembling them. I concur with using caliper paint. Just be sure to thoroughly wipe them down with lacquer thinner first to completely remove any brake fluid on the outside before painting.

Thanks for the advice guys. I went down to the auto parts store last night and bought some caliper paint. Cost about 15 bucks for some cleaner and the paint. Painted them last night and they look great. Now just a test of time to see how it holds up.

I had no problem rebuilding the calipers on my Cutlass, all the necessary parts were available through Car Quest. My goof was using high temp engine paint to freshen up their appearance. I got a little fluid on them while bleeding the system and the paint ran. Had a paint shop guy tell me later that catalyzed paint will stand up to the brake fluid.

I've heard brake fluid is the most caustic / destructive fluid used in a vehicle.

As opposed to battery acid? I think not.

Although my experience is only doing it once and maybe got lucky I had no issues disassembling my used C6 Corvette calipers. I even reused all the seals when they cam back from the powder coater.

I thought I remembered that you did that, was wondering when you might comment on your experience.
