What’s the name of that flying saucer looking spring backing plate that goes on the upper pin in drum brakes? (72 cutlass convertible) and anyone know where I can get a replacement? (Lost one &#128553 -on a separate note - my parking brake doesn’t ratchet - if I step on it it will stop the brakes but it won’t click to hold them - any ideas? Thanks in advande gang! - Joe R.

Which it is - it guides the upper end of the shoes back into position against that pin when you release the brakes.

On the parking brake, are you saying that the parking brake pedal doesn't stay in the depressed position? If so, either the release handle is stuck in the pulled out position or the pawl that ratchets against the pedal arm is stuck (check for rust on the pivot pin) or the spring on that pawl is broken.

thanks as always Joe - guide plate on order - as for the parking brake - that is correct - I will check out the release handle, pivot pin, and the spring on the pawl and let you know what I find. Thanks again - Joe R.

These guides are a common part and I would think available at your local parts supplier. Did you find one yet?

I’ve got one on order - used a washer as a place holder in the meantime

They are not a normal wear item, thus there is no reason for a store to have one in stock.

Well the weather has gotten nicer and back to work on the Olds - the parking brake cable Adjusted nicely - car keeps on surprising me how good of shape it is in with little rust - the issue with parking brakes is the ratcheting foot pedal - if I kick the release handle and twist the whole assemble left or right I can kinda get it to hold but the slightest bump will release it - is this something that I can clean up and make work nicely or should I just replace it?
