Spindle Modification - 1968 442 Disc Brake Conversion
These pics show how I cut off the upper boss on my drum brake spindle to accept the disc brake caliper bracket. I mounted the bracket using the lower bolt and scribed two lines on the boss where the bracket hit. I cut between the two lines - leaving the boss sticking out too far - then carefully ground off a little at a time while checking the fit.
The upper hole in the OEM caliper bracket is 5/8 (versus 1/2 for the drum brake spindle). I decided to stick with a 1/2 " bolt and used these bushings from Harbor Freight to fill in the space and get a snug fit between the bolt and bracket. The alternative is to drill and tap the upper hole. The cut-off wheels also came from Harbor Freight.
I used rotors, calipers, hoses, etc. from Napa. I had to return two rotors due to excessive runout.
I used OEM caliper brackets. I bought a pair of repops, but they had 1/32 oversize mounting holes for both the 1/2 and 5/8 bolts. This seemed excessive to me. The holes in the OEMs fit the bolts exactly.
