My roof has pimples. Weird!

Hi guys,

i DA-ed the roof on my 68 tonight and noticed there are at least 20 or more of these little metal zits on it. The center is raised above the original metal
line, and they all have a recessed ring. I'm planning on grinding them down with an angle grinder, but was just curious if anyone else has seen these on their vinyl roof cars?

raised roof....likely the roof got damaged, and a stud welder dent puller was used...

That makes sense, now that I look at it. I guess the P.O. Didn't bother smoothing it out since he put a top back on it. It must have looked horrible!

I'll grind em down and finish sanding. Thanks, guys!

I dare say many cars that left the factory with a vinyl roof didn't have any attention paid to its finish on the assembly line.

My '72 442 with its 1983 paint job also has dozens of those bumps. They haven't changed in the 17 years I've owned the car. I'll address them when I gets repainted.

Roger.
The roof pillars were finished on the "lead line".

Cars with vinyl tops got a quickie lead job and no finishing.

That it what I saw when I worked at a GM plant in 1972.

The "lead line" was the worst job in the plant. Most of the folks who worked there ended up with lead poisoning.

late 70s and 80s olds didn't get lead under the vinyl top, unless it had to be repaired. they got a plastic filler, not bondo, some other sort of plastic. I did the lead work on the lansing line. also was a metal finisher on the line, panels did come in with pimples and dents, if the car was slated for vinyl, didn't finish the roof unless it was real bad,if it was padded top even less attention. don't just grind them off,use a body file(called a vixen file) and the sand with 80 grit disc, then d/a sand with 120 grit.

pretty much.my 66 chevelle had a vinyl top which will not be going back on.and they actually finished the lead pretty good on the roof to 1/4 seem. But there are other imperfections they didn't bother with.and years ago my dad worked in a caddy, olds pontiac dealership.and ended up with one of those files, which i still have and use,man that thing is awesome, mows it down with a couple passes.one of my favorite body tools.
