What is this called?

The guy I bought the car off of said someone backed into the grill and tore it up. What is this support called. Hood latch support? Stone guard support? I've looked up several different things with no luck. Is it separate from the core support or is it part of it? I'm looking for one for a 72 if anyone has one or knows someone.

Posting a picture that we could see might be helpful.

Meanwhile, can you find it here?

OK! I posted and was wrong - that's part of the core support. You need to have it repaired by a good shop. It's not reproduced.

No, #39 is the part I'm needing and it hasn't been very easy to fine. I've seen some used core supports with it and some without.

#39: Support, Hood Latch (welded), or

Hood latch support, '70-'72 F-85, #406862.

As the description states, this piece is welded to the core support, which explains some uncertainty as to whether it is all one piece or not.

39 is called the hood latch support and it's welded to the core support. That's what it says in the GM Parts manual. Group 8.080 Part 406862. Like I said earlier - I haven't seen it as a reproduced part.

Dang you're quick Eric. I was doing a web search to see if I could find it anywhere. They're common repros for Chevy, but not Olds

Anytime. Seeing as you're in OH you're right next to 2 guys who can likely help you. Send one of these guys a PM, they both part out these cars. Most often the battery tray area is rusted out or the car has been hit on one side leaving that center brace very usable - just needs to be cut out. Those supports are the same for 71/72 Cutlass models, regardless of being coupe, sedan or wagon.

jensenracing77 - Eric - in Brazil, Indiana
oldspackrat - Scott - in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Have a look at this 72 core support listed here on the site for 100.00. Maybe you could get him to cut out and send just the section you need?

If we're talking about that support that the grilles bolt to and the hood release handle gives through, isn't it bolted to the core support with four bolts?

Joe is correct....it's just BOLTED to the core support, not welded.

Okay. Well, so much for accepting the Parts Manual's description...

Thanks Allan! I sent the guy a PM asking if he'd just sell the center section. I'm waiting on a reply from another guy on here that's looking to see if he has one also.

I'm not a bodyman, but your picture shows a piece that is just bent, not missing or rusted through. Seems to me a competent bodyshop could remove, straighten, and repair that piece to like new condition....

Yes, it's bent and it's ripped. It's bad enough that I would have about the same amount of money having someone "try" to fix it and hope that everything lines back up and fits, as I would if I just found one and replaced it myself. The car is just going to be a daily driver but I don't want to fight with trying to get the stone guard and everything lined back up.

As others have stated, it is bolted. They are hard to find, and usually are slightly bent when found used.
