Vinyl Top
Hi,
We just got out 1971 Cutlass today. I was wondering if there is any type of product or procedure that should be done to cars like this with vinyl tops. I have heard that these cars had rust issues in the area between the bottom of the rear window and the trunk lid seam. I can see how water would collect in this area so I just wondered if there was something to do about it.

Nice looking car, Whats the interior like?
Water is easily trapped in bottom window channel when raining or washing.
Hard to keep water out if exposed but the best thing to do would be keep it dry and maybe try to blow out the channel with air after. A good water tight seal around glass and no cavity for water to collect is good idea. The vinyl top can fatigue and let water through also so make sure it is tight. JMO
P.S. I don't see those rims that often

The interior is actually very good too. No tears or rips. Just some small stress cracks in some areas on the seats. Dash looks good too. For me it is a little lacking in terms of gauges. I would like a tach and temp gauge at the least, but I can look into getting those put in later. I believe there is a factory gauge cluster for these that has those right? I would prefer a stock look rather than having aftermarket gauges all over the place.
He said these rims usually color match the car, but he painted the to match the vinyl top, which I think is a nice touch.

Kensey, funny you should say that. It was the first solution that came to mind for me, but thought the car community might shoot me for saying such a thing, lol. As long as it was done minimally and cleanly, I think it would help....
I guess the other side of that is that there probably is no way to make it 100% water tight so why bother, just try to keep it dry. But I think anything that would help would be worth doing.

I think that is a bad idea. The factory never did this when they installed vinyl tops and it's just asking to trap moisture and lead to more rust.
