water pump bolt timing cover issue

This problem has been discussed before but I thought I would add to the discussion. The bottom two bolts of the water pump will thread and snug up but if I try to put 10ft pounds of torque they keep turning. They water pump did not leak before and I did not strip the bolts since I was using a torque wrench. What gives? I think I will take a chance to see if it holds. They seem snug and all the other bolts are fiine.

Thoughts?

I recommend that you take the cover off and weld nuts to the back side of the cover to fix the problem. Why take a chance on a leak Just my two cents

You are right. I just ordered a new cover from the parts place.

The manual says 13 ft pounds for the water pump bolts. I don't want to strip out the new cover. Suggestions on torque for the bolts?

The 13 ft lbs should be fine. If you don't have a torque wrench that goes down that small. Then use a ratchet and hold it at the **** not on the handle and tighten using wrist action only that way you won't over tighten
the bolts. easy does it

Thanks.

Have you used the copper spray gasket for the water pump. I have a couple of friends that do but I am skeptical.

Nope, just use the standard gasket sealer with a new gasket. Never had a problem

Angry

I read on this forum that you don't have to remove the entire oil pan to put the timing cover off/on. They say just losen the front bolts. This would be great since the oil pan gasket is only 1 month old (composite rubber cork). Hate to take the entire pan off and start over but if that is the correct way to do it then I guess I will. Nothing like doing everything twice.
