long crank, hard start after hot soak

1967 442
400 CI

symptoms:
after a hot soak, the engine cranks a long time before starting. i find pumping the gas 5 or 6 times helps but this isnt normal.

during hot soak, fuel seems to be draining back to the tank. the draining back lasts about 5 minutes.

check out the video:

has anyone else seen this phenomenon ?

I had that problem...the fuel pump was the problem. The diaphragm was weak or something. Changed the mechanical pump for $17 and problem was solved.

Anyone else have different experiences?

PS, another thing I noticed was that the filter (exact same as what you've got in your video) was loose. I took the hose off one end and tightened it up a bit and it held pressure much better after.

Yup, What ah64pilot said. I replaced the fuel pump and tightened the fitting at the carb.

Get rid of the glass filter they are prone to leaking and/or breaking and go to a all metal fuel filter unless you want a fried Olds which is not a pretty site. I have seen this in more then one instance.
