Thumbs up Great Find!! 1968-455 Hi-Comp Engine $300

Hope this engine runs well!! Found a 1968 455 with 43,000 (YES) 43,000 miles on it in PA. This is to replace my "0 Compression in #1 cylinder engine" I posted on this site two weeks ago. It is carb to oil pan and 6 blade fan to flywheel, alt is there too! Got back last night and started to unbolt accessories to get to bare block tonight. This was in a 1968 98 they bought from the original owner and it has been in storage for a long time. Father son team wanted it for their 1968 98 convert but never put it in. They have the paperwork from both cars and it is 43,000 original miles!!

Anyway here are the numbers and the accessories:
Block #396021F 68-F2 Build date is 66
VIN# 38M3#####
Fan clutch with 6 Blades #401797 OS code
Intake #398662 J
Carb 4BBL #7029253-2567
Dist #1112197-9B20 Advance #MS 232-18 Still has original Delco-Remy cap and rotor and the lubracating sponge for the cam lobes.
Heads CFD #15 #394648 80
CFD #13 #394648 80 Hope they have large valves!

The only thing that has been unbolted and replaced that I can see is the water pump. Everything else is untouched! Steel head gaskets, original turkey pan and rubber end gaskets, even has the AC Delco R-44 green stripe plugs and an original PF-30 Oil filter still on it!

I know some are going to say, "No" that Distributor came from a 1973 Olds and the carb a 69 442 and the fan clutch from a 442. But how do you explain the date codes on the Dist? It was clearly made in early 1969 like the rest of the engine. (This was an untouched engine form an original car) I don't know and I don't care I just want it to run good!!!

I'm thinking of just leaving it alone and take a chance, ya know don't fix what's not broke. I will swap my accessories after I pull the pan and replace the seals and gaskets (Hope to find a steel crank) also the timing chain since originals had the nylon covered teeth that fall off over time from getting brittle. And bolting it in my car. What do you guys think?

DONT PULL IT APART!!!!! Try and test run it first. If anything take off the valve covers, oil pan, timing cover. Pull that nylon timing set and junk it. Put in a steel timiming set. clean out the pan and pickup, and clean it up and put in a few new gaskets and paint.

Oh and check the crank. If its got a Checkmark notch where the flexplate bolts you scored!!! If its a U shape then its just a standard N crank. You can see it with the flywheel on.

Congrats on a sweet low miles motor!!! If I understand right, the Forged Cranks are found on 2V 455's? Has anyone found one on a four barrel motor?

68 442(think positive, it will come together)

I did. I just pulled one out of a 68 Toro. BUT it is not a numbers matching engine. It was a late dec 67 date code engine. Will all the toro parts on it. UHC 455 with the forged crank. This thing looked like it was never taken apart. But you can see on the toro parts its blue but the block is red. Its an ODD one.

F-85 I agree, I will keep it together! I'm thinking if putting my starter on it with the engine on the lift and doing a compression test before I do anything. Even before painting it! That way I will at least know the condition of the lower end.
Then if all checks out do the chain, gaskets, and paint, etc.

I kind of want to know if they are the large valves of not.

Also, should I re-torque the heads and intake before I put it back in the car?? What do you guys think about that?

I find it hard to believe that a 40 plus year old motor only has 43,000 miles on it.

I would pull it apart and see what needed to be done to it to make it a reliable 455 that would last another 40 years but hey thats me.

If you check the compression and it has good compression and you don't want to rebuild it and just want to clean it up and and paint it and put in in your car, leave the spark plugs in when you paint the heads and replace them with a new set of NGK XR5 plugs gapped @ .035".

I have seen so many people rebuild their engines and are frustrated when the engine doesn't start because they get paint on the spark plug holes and then the plugs don't fire.

Atleast change the oil and and put a good oil filter on it.

I want everybody who reads this topic to put their hand on their computer screen and say a little prayer for HurstOlds1775 and ask the Olds Gods to bless this motor so it doesn't blow up.

thats great , I have a 68 455 out of a Toro that I may or may not throw in my 72 CS , the motor had about 65,000 on the basic rebuild. The motor sat in my ma's garage for a few years , and i was curious as to what it may be worth if I ever had to get rid of it...suposedly it was the 400hp one.
