71 vs 73 bbo quadrajet

So my 1971 cutlass with a 455 is in the shop getting a tune up after I bought it from the previous owner who let it sit for 8 years, and they called me today to tell me that the original 71 quadrajet is junk and they wont be able to rebuild it. I have a quadrajet off a 73 455 on my shelf, and although they look different, just wondering if the 73 will work for my application or should I just start looking for a replacement carb now?
*Im also taking them an 1980 chevy quadrajet, maybe they could scrounge some parts off it, but I'm not sure of the interchangeability.

TIME OUT!!! Just how did this shop determine that the quadrajet was junk? Please consider sending it to a quadrajet specialist like Everyday Performance or Cliff Ruggles. Do it yourself, youtube has several videos. The original carb will work best and the linkage and lines will match up perfectly. If you can't find anyone to rebuild it, send me a pm, I've been doing them for 30yrs. Good luck

I didn't get an exact diagnosis on it but I will ask this morning. The guy who works at the shop is a long time Oldsmobile guy with lots of experience so I trust his judgment but I'll make sure to ask what's exactly wrong with it. Thanks

He said someone attempted to rebuild the carb at some point and the messed with a screw inside the carb that's not supposed to be touched and now it's screwed up, so he is going to try to take the bottom plate off the 73 to use on the 71 and if that doesn't work they have a rebuilt one bought that's coming in today I'm told. I'm not familiar enough with these to know exactly what he's talking about but since the cars at their shop I'm just going to trust them and let them figure it out, it will probably cost me a lot more but it's my only option without letting it sit there for a week or two while I find a replacement.

I'm assuming your mechanic is talking about the ATP (adjustable part throttle) screw located in the base plate. These are set at the factory and plugged sealed. I concede that if it is buggered up it's hard to fix. Good luck.

The Q-Jet was continually improved and updated right up until it was phased out of production. The later models will obviously need to be recalibrate to work in a performance application.
