455 upgrade going ahead (finally)
Hey guys I'm after some help with cam specs that will suit my mild '73 smog 455 upgrade.
Going for a mild fast-ish revving street motor to about 5500+? with a bit of a lopey idle, good low end torque. Mostly for fun street cruising, occasional burnout comp and occasional 1/4 mile sprints for giggles.
The treasury dept gave me a budget of sorts..
So far I have parts, have ordered parts or am looking at,
big valve C heads, stock
Wiseco PTS537A3 Pro Tru Pistons .030 over
Cometic .027" head gaskets (with the Cometic gaskets should get to 10:1?)
my std rods
my stock oil pump
Cloyes double roller timing set
Edelbrock performer dual plane manifold
my QuadJet 800cfm carb
my stock Olds points dizzy
oldschool '70's Mallory CDI and Mallory coil
Thornton 402295 W and 402294 Z manifolds. (I don't think this refresh warrants headers)
Dual 2 1/4" pipes to rear
TH400 with shift kit and stock converter
3:23 posi rear
finally found a competent shop to do the machining
I've decided to upgrade the cam too but keep the hydraulic lifters/ rocker setup
Currently cam is the stock '73 smog; 400117, 194/207@.050", .435/.435
Not sure what will suit this build combo, maybe something like one of these grinds;
205/215 @.050", .448/.475
214/224 @.050" .479/.479 (too much?)
What do you guys think/ would you put in?
I know the Delta is around 4600lb, not trying to make it a racecar.

Thanks Mark, what hp do you think I'll make ball park? It doesn't bother me, just be nice to know, it'll never see a dyno.
I guess you can ship me the cam and bearings, how much coin to ship it to Aust?
Oh, while I've got you, does a performance harmonic damper help make any more power than the stock balancer?

I think I stuffed up my compression ratio, using an online calculator puts it at 11 to 1 using my estimates and parts, oops.

Those are 15cc dish piston correct? You are looking at 80cc heads, maybe more. I get more like 10 to 1. I would do a clean up deck to the block and heads and see how far the pistons sit down in the hole before ordering .027" head gaskets. Here is the calculator I use. The cam timing part isn't accurate.

The pistons are same as the ones Macadoo has for his rebuild, already ordered and paid for.

they list them as dome with -15cc dome volume and I worked it out using a 82cc head volume.
I'll have to be careful now with decking the block and cleaning up the heads
11:1 is way too much.
Edit, just used your calculator olds307403 and got 13.33:1 ratio
must be doing something wrong..

Exactly, I get anywhere from 9.5 to 1 to 10 to 1 depending on where the piston sits in the hole and head gasket thickness. Do you have 93 octane available?

93, or 98 in Aust, is commonly available almost everywhere here so i'm not too concerned if the compression ratio ends up at 10:1 or a bit above. I'm aiming for 10:1.
