I am starting to finally put this 455 block together and am running into some uncertainty with main torque spec. Some materials show 120ft lbs and just seen ARP show 100ft lbs. For the main torque spec, Just want your opinion. I have them torqued at 120ft lbs and am starting ti second guess it. The bolts im using the ARPs.

What happened with the cam thrust bearing issue ?


What materials are you looking at ? Was the ARP specs specific to an OLDS 455 ?

Wasn't there a piece of paper in the box of ARP bolts that gave the recommended torque?

My Olds shop manual shows 120 ft lbs and the ARP card says 100 ft lbs. Seems like a huge difference. Also I wound up taking a another block to a different machinest because the new machinest didn't want to touch the thrust issue block the other guy messed with, I guess I understand.

The ARP torque specs usually specify their special lube. If you torqued them to 120 with the lube then i would back them off and redo them correctly. I really doubt that it hurt the bolts but call ARP just to be sure. They are very good and will tell you.



If you only used oil on them then you probably ended up with about the same stretch as you would have with the ARP lube at 100 lbs.



Let us know what ARP says.

ARP said to do a visual inspection and to do a measurement on the bolts to see if they were stretched passed 3 1/2 inchs to determine if they are good or not.

I did use the lube the provided in the box.
