Accel pump issue

Hey guys,

I am about at my wits end I’ve had this carburetor
part about six or seven times I’ve went to three rebuild kits
every time I put it back together the Accel pump gasket falls off and get smashed down under the spring and I have no fuel am I putting it together wrong this is exactly how I’m putting it in the carb.

Make sure you work the lip of the seal into the bore before you push down on it, and take care that it doesn't pop out while you're installing the air horn.

Piston should move smoothly up and down (with spring tension). Is the lever binding, or maybe a problem with the hole in the air horn causing the piston rod to hang up?

I would replace the corroded spring and accelerator pump with the newer style which has a garter spring. Whatever caused the corrosion may also damaged your check ball and seat.

I had this happen twice on my Q-Jet, the third and final repair attempt was a new accelerator pump from Cliffs Q-Jets. Cliff told me the issue is the enthonal in today’s fuels. The piston swells enough for the spring to eventually pull apart. The W-Jet on my car was a Edelbrock 850 that I bought new in a sealed box from a swap meet, the 2 pistons I replaced came from parts store rebuilds. The piston from cliff was installed about 5 years ago, that carb is now on my friends 66 Olds and still going strong
