What carb should I run?

I don't know much about carburetors hoping someone would guide me in the right direction. I have a 69 442 with a 455 out of a 75 vista. Fresh rebuild 30 over, G heads 9:1, mild cam, dual plane rpm airgap. Looking to be a weekend warrior and sometimes daily. Down the road I'll go for aluminum heads and a beefyer cam. I live in NC so no elevation and it dosent get too cold its just humid as a mf. Really no idea where to start looking.

How does it run now? Does it have a factory Quadrajet? Usually you can get a Qjet to run pretty good with a rebuild kit and proper adjustment.

If you want an aftermarket carburetor then go with the Edlebrock 1406/1411. I have a Summit carburetor on my 71 98 and it's a PITA since it always needs adjustment. My father had a Holley carburetor on his 69 Delta 88 and it was tempermental as well.

Since its a squarebore mounting a Quadrajet will not work without an adapter. I'd go with a 750 vac secondary like Holley or one of its many clones. I would not use an Ebrock because you may run into air cleaner and/or hood clearance issues.

I didn't even notice that he mentioned it was a square bore manifold, but I guess an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap isn't available as a spread bore intake. The bad thing about going to an aftermarket carb is that you might have interference problems with your air cleaner, hood or throttle cable. I think the driveability of an Edelbrock over a Holley would make you happier though. Plus, you can also get an Edlebrock Thunder AVS carburetor that has adjustable secondaries.

Your call though, I'm just letting you know what I have experienced.

Not worried about hood clearance the previous owner put a hood snorkel on it. Not a huge fan of it but that's another project. I'm down to the edelbrock 1407 and Holley 870 street avenger. My q jet works fine I just want to run this airgap over the factory intake

A Performer would have probably been a better choice. Either a 750 Street Demon is fuel economy is a priority or the 750 Quickfuel Slayer series. No Edelbrock.

Yes, lose the RPM Air gap, wrong intake for your build, even with aluminum heads.
An 830 Quick Fuel would be your best choice. Elec choke, smaller primaries and loads of tunability.

Hey Mark, Do you recommend Vacuum or Mechanical secondary?

Big blocks will handle mech secondarys pretty well. Plus the QF carbs have adjustable mech secondarys.

I had great results with a Holley 670 Street Avenger on a 327 Chevy built to L-79 specs. Square bore and infinitely adjustable, but at the same time, once you dial it in it holds its tune forever. You might try a 770.
