Crank Timing Gear Key

When installing new timing chain set, is it more efficient to have the crank timing gear key removed first (as the CSM states), install the timing set then drive key back in or keep key in and tap gear in over the key?

I have never done it this way, and never had a problem. But then i cant comment if its more efficient because again, never did it this way. Maybe it is more efficient. Good luck
