What year did the 394 get an aluminum waterpump?

This engine is in a 1961 Super 88.

Just trying to make a positive ID on this engine to see if it is worth putting into my 1960 Dynamic 88.

The engine you in your pictures is either a 63 or 64 - two years only of 394 production with an aluminum timing chain front cover and an aluminum water pump. None of this is interchangeable to an earlier 394. The oil pan is also unique to 63 and 64. Some 64s had a lighter intake manifold with an air gap between the water passages for the thermostat and the forward intake runners. I suspect the engine in this 61 Super 88 is a 1963 98 or Super 88 330 hp 394.

Thanks for the info, 394Olds!

Are the oil pan differences you mention problematic when swapping these engines into earlier year models?

Will the accessory brackets swap from my 371 onto this 394?

Sorry for all the newbie questions.....

Greg

I agree with 394 olds. I have a 1963 D88 and your engine looks just like mine. What are the numbers on your head. Meaning driver side center of the head by the exhaust manifold.
Is your block red in color?

I'll give you an award too for responding to an old post. The engine looked so much like mine, I couldn't resist. Did you transplant it? My engine runs like a top. It was dormant like the rest of my D-88 for at least 10 years in texas I was told. It was a long process to get it where it is now, but my 394 is a great engine runs great, no smoke, good compression and all.

Do you still have your car? Whats the story??
