Spiroloc retainers

Hi all. Am building a 455" for my '57 super 88. Just received my Icon pistons w/Spiroloc retainers. I have heard that they are tough to install, but I can't seem to even get one started. (Trying to be careful not to scar pistons, or take a sledge to them). Do the advertised tools work? Or is there a trick? Many thanks.

Spiroloc retainers

hello again. i posted a question yesterday re: problems installing Spiroloc Piston Pin retainers. (received no hits back) but I did figure it out. The spiroloc retainers i am using are double the thickness and length of the normal double spiroloc retainers normally used. Evidently ICON uses this type. I simply stretched (or sprung) them approx. 1 1/2 inches instead of the 1/2"-3/4" in the instructions. (DUH!) Anyway that made them much easier to work with. Hope this helps someone down the line. Sorry if it's a DUMB POST!

The easy way to put spirolocks in us to pull them apart so they look like a coil spring. Then you can stick one end in and work your way around pushing it down into place. A blunt tool helps get the last 3/4 turn in.
