Performer Intake Mods Vs. O4B

Hi,
I am considering milling down my Performer intake about 1/2" for hood clearance or running a O4B intake.

Here is the engine specs:

1968 455 block 40 over
Keith Black hyper. 277 pistons 10:1 CR
Comp Cams XE268H
Stock C heads
stamped roller rockers
guide plates
hardened push rods
Hooker 3902 headers
Carter AFB Competition 750 CFM
Edelbrock Performer intake
Ebay HEI

Dyno Results: 490 TQ 360 HP

1) Any other mods to the Performer that I should do?

2) Can you modify an HEI Distributor and or the O4B to use together?

3) Will the O4B hurt performance?

Thanks in advance,

Tony

The O4B won't hurt performance on that build. That would probably be the easiest thing to do.
Not sure what can be done for using an HEI with the O4B. I have managed to cut miscellaneous other intakes and get an HEI to work though. It can be a real pia to do sometimes. There are other options that are every bit as good as an HEI and will fit without modification. For example the MSD ready to run distributors.

I'd cut the Performer before I used the O4B. The Performer has a larger plenum, even after cutting, than the O4B. That's even more important with only a 750 carb.

So Tony!
Did you figure out that we will need the Performer intake half an inch lower to clear the hood on our 68's? If so...I have one I need to have cut down also. Two for one at your machine shop?

Thanks for the input.

I'll look around the garage and see what combos for intakes, carbs, & distributors I can come up with. Think I'm going try the O4b with a Quadrajet while getting the performer cut down.

Tom,

I still have a beveled carb spacer to try.
Did you try fitting your hood yet? Hope the Quadrajet will give you enough room to not have to modify your intake.

I'll let you know how things turn out after it stops snowing!!!!

I run an 04B, I'm pretty sure you'll have to do some grinding to allow room for your HEI.

Why are you running a carb spacer with a Performer? I know that there are limited solutions for an air cleaner for an Edelbrock carb to enable the use of a flat hood with a 455.

You can get a small HEI distributor with external coil for around $125
same size as points distributor.
Ebay is as cheap as anyone else for these.
