Milled pads c heads

I bought these a few years ago, rebuilt. Stud holes are drilled out to 7/16 , question I have is the pads, they look like they were already milled for guide plates. Compared to my other heads that ridge is raised. I assume the springs are aftermarket also, he mentioned some brand. I'm going to take some measurements before using. Plan to run the cam below.

Milling the pads is based on what guide plate your using. You normally mill them at least the thickness of the plate, plus a few thousandths.

Louie,
I have a set of 7 heads I just did for a customer. The pads have not been milled. If you lay a straight edge across the valve cover rails the pad is exactly the same height.

I think I would double check the springs before installing them. The heads still have rotators on them and I dont know how much spring you can get with the rotators.

I messed with them last night, springs appear to be installed at 1.7, springs in the head and a pair of smaller double springs have low pressure, the taller 950 comp cams 1.9 have too much seat pressure of course at 1.7. I have a pair of edelbrock heads and getting close to just using them. It's entirely possible I'm doing something wrong since it's my first time trying to do this.

If you are going to use the Comp springs you need to get rid of the rotators and use aftermarket retainers like the ones in my picture. Probably a good idea to get rid of them anyway on a performance application.

I just looked at a set of Edelbrock heads I have here for Tim ( https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...height-143659/ ) and found out something interesting. Using the OEM GM valve height tool the valves in the Edelbrock head are actually about .065 taller than the tool ???? I had to put .065 shims under the tool on the valve cover rails to get it to clear the valve. So it looks like custom pushrods will be needed with them. Maybe Mark will chime in if he has used any of the Edelbrock heads.

By the way, you should always check the spring pressure with the retainer. The inner step of the retainer will push down on the inner spring and change the pressure.

I do have matching retainers, I will check pressure again with those. Thanks!

Not sure what your post title has to do with springs but as mentioned throw the rotators away and use and check them with the right retainer.
Edelbrocks use a +.100 valve. Typical installed heights are around 1.850, apples to oranges.

I only mentioned them because plenty of people probably think you can bolt them on a run This is the first set I have seen for an Oldsmobile.

I have actually taken them right out of the box and bolted them on once or twice. No issues.

Mark,
Nice to know. These look pretty decent. They will need different springs because he is going with a hydraulic roller and the springs on the heads from Edelbrock are too light.
