Heads for 455 [1976]

I have a 1976 455 motor in my 69 442. It has the J heads. After reading some of the threads about switching to C, E, GA or G heads, seems some say "no big difference" and some say, "J is for Junk". Does anyone know the HP difference when using the various heads?

Depends on valve sizes etc.
But if you have stock J heads on your 455 you should benefit by replacing them with almost anything else.

Fairly sure they are stock...any leads on where to get new/rebuilt heads?

If you're not concerned about keeping the stock look, then just throw a set of Procomps on it and be done with it.
By the time you buy a set of irons, put in guides, maybe seats, valves springs etc your about 80% there already. And the aluminum heads offer the option of more compression/power without any increase in octane requirements.

I just had some J heads redone for another person. One was found cracked...
Used valves were salvageable, seats were in good shape. 8 new exhaust guides, resurface head gasket surface, std valve job all came to about $300. $50 more for new springs and keepers. Reused the rotators. $100 or so for all new rockers and pedestals. Total of maybe $450 plus the head cores.

Oh, and I have LOTS of G, C, B, A, etc. castings if you wish to rebuild something other than J's.

New valves were seen a while back on epay at about $250 the set.

There are several sets of "Procomp" aluminium heads on Ebay. Depending on your location, you can pick.
If it was me I would get a set from "Bernard Mondello" in Calif. His are $1400 set up with premium parts. He is the son of "Joe" and has nothing to do with "Mondello" in Paso Robles" CA. You will need roller rockers and new push rods.

Hate to say it, but all the 71-76 455 motors are lacking because the pistons suck. The J heads are only a minor part of the problem. You can run J heads well over the 400 horsepower mark.

Save your money for pistons if you want more horsepower, in my opinion.

Gene (or anybody else) have any "true life results" for the Pro Comp heads? I have only heard a few venders say anything about them and those were sales pitches.

I put a 488 Olds together using Procomp and Eagle parts. The heads look good, but customer has not run it yet. still in the body shop.
