DSS vs DMR vs Mondello forged 425 pistons

Hi everyone, I'm rebuilding my first 425 currently and I am looking to upgrade my bottom end with forged pistons so that it is stout enough to take any current and future power mods I decide to do and I have been told that its always a good idea to build a super strong short block. I have found 3 different pistons that I was looking at and I was curious if anyone had any experience or opinions with any of these:

425-DMR-P-5425: https://dickmillerracing-com.3dcarts...425_p_141.html
DSS-K2-6020-4000C: https://shop.dssracing.com/ProductDe...2D6020%2D4000C These are technically listed as a 400 piston but I called and they will make the same style for the 425 with the correct pin height and bore its just listed under the 400
Mondello 2040: https://mondelloperformance.com/prod.../pistons-pins/

Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts!

Cutlassefi (Mark Remmel) has collaborated on bringing a good forged piston to the market. I would say contact him about it.

FYI, the early 400 and 425 have the same pin height as the SBO engines (260/307/330/350/403) so you just need to get the bore size required, which I think Mark has available.

Correct Christian.
i got Mahle to offer a .030 over 425 piston and ring kit. It’s a fully coated 4032 forging with the most modern all steel ring pack available. It has 10cc valve reliefs, and is a bit taller than the stock piston so you’ll retain a good squish even with a std head gasket.
Pistons, pins, clips AND rings are $695.00 shipped.

Hi Mark I have been told by several people on the site to seek your advice on many things engine building so it is good to hear from you. That is awesome those sound great for what I’m trying to do.

I did have a few other questions: do the pins work with the factory rods?/Is there anything I have to modify to make them work? Also a more general question from my piston research: i have seen a lot of different forged sets that are either 4032 or 2618 and from what I’ve found online the difference is a silicon content thing which makes the 2618 more resistant to boost but expands more when at operating temperature. I was just wondering if you knew if there is any truly noticeable difference in standard operation (I have heard the 2618 squeak when cold starting and have a better chance of surviving detonation but I was wondering just normal use)

Sorry for the essay just trying to learn as much as I can having just started.

Thanks in advance

Mike

The guys at DSS are great to work with. No middle man.
I run DSS 4.185 piston in my 425, no issues. The piston is good for the price. The longest it has taken for me to get an Olds piston set from them 2 weeks. They will make it any bore you want up to 4.195 if I remember right, same price.

What does the piston to wall clearance end up with these pistons?

I won’t argue the DSS is a decent piston. But for less than $100 difference you get a fully coated piston along with a much more modern ring pack. Just sayin.

The Mahle is a superior piston.

I can't locate my build sheet. If I recall correctly it was .0037

That isn't bad for 2618 piston, less than the old Speedpro pistons need.
