63 Super 88 394 - Exhaust options

Getting her back on the road. Back muffler is rotted out. Wouldn't mind livening her up a tad, without being annoying (I'm 62). Thinking of putting a glasspack on it. Any recommendations?

Still just single exhaust? Might make more noise, but I doubt that would liven her up very much.

Your 63 Super 88 needs a dual exhaust manifold on the driver's side to run true dual exhaust. You also might be able to crossover the exhaust from the driver's side and run 2 exhaust pipes from the passenger's side. Oldsguy (my father) did this with the 455 in his 69 Delta 88 (the later model engines also used a dual exhaust manifold on the driver's side).

The 455 dual exhaust manifold is reproduced. You'll have to scour eBay or the salvage yard for the 394/371 dual exhaust manifold.

I suggest taking your Oldsmobile to a local exhaust shop to see what they can do.

I was not looking for dual exhaust - just need to replace the mufflers and was thinking about a galsspack instead. Some are so loud as to be annoying. Was looking for some suggestions.

If it still has two mufflers on it with dual exhaust, one of those is a resonator. It would be the shortest one closest to the rear of the car. You can eliminate that and just put a single muffler on it. I had a Smitty Glasspack on the 54 I used to have and it was not loud. Then I put duals on it with another one. It just had a nice mellow sound both ways. Get you a Smitty and take your car to a good muffler shop. They can install the muffler and make you a new tailpipe without the resonator. Get the 30" Smitty as it will be quieter.

I eliminated the resonator and put on a Thrush Turbo and it sounds really nice. It has a nice rumble when idling and smooths out when under way and highway speeds there is no drone.

No. That's the single exhaust LH and likely same one you have. Notice the dimple cast into the rear of it. That's to clear the steering gear. The dual exhaust manifold also has that but the exit is toward the rear instead of the center.

This is the one you need:

FWIW, I have dual 45" glasspacks on my 71 98. It's too loud, I need to go back to the exhaust shop and have turbo mufflers installed.

When I was going to have to replace mine I had watched and listened to a dozen videos of where they compared the sounds. Many of them made the car sound like a truck. My next door neighbor who is a young guy loved the sound of the car when the muffler was completely shot and almost straight pipe, I'm not a fan of really loud. I first tried the Flowmaster 40 but found it to be rattley and tinny sounding. Then I tried the Thrush Turbo and and found it to be just right. I should do a video to demonstrate the sound.

After reading the entire thread, I'm not clear on a couple of things:

1) Does the car currently have dual exhausts?

2) What does OP want, dual or single exhaust?

Jesse:

I want to be sure we don't highjack this thread but do you have an H pipe on your 98? If not, you might try that first. Even if you wind up changing the mufflers, it is still a good thing to have. It helps with the drone.

Big Flowmaster SS 70s , then MBRP SS resonators at the tails, x pipe, factory dual manifolds seem available. I'd also consider a pair highflow performance cats!
