I never have had a balancer fit loose on the crank. It fact I damaged the threads on the end of a crank trying to pull it on using the bolt. Made a believer out of me for using a harmonic balancer installer. I read somewhere that the 1st small block Chevies didn't even use a bolt for the balancer, the balancer was just pressed on.

True about the chevys, I had a 61 Vette with a 350 HP 327 and the balancer was a press on. I was driving down the street one day and the balancer passed me going about 65 mph. Seems like the belts were the only thing holding it on the crank.
