394 oil spitting out breather
Ive asked a few friends and cant get a good answer. The car keeps spitting oil out the breater. I dont beat on the car, but i also dont baby it. I beat on my F-85, and i baby my dog. This car is for driving. Why would it be spitting oil out the breather?

Apparently no one has told you that 394's are notorious for blowby problems after they get some miles on them. The problem is aggravated by their need for true high-octane fuel.
Just for grins, if the engine still has the mushroom-shaped oil filler/breather cap, make sure the foam element is in place. If not, some of that foam you use to seal up a window airconditioner can be cut to fit and work fine. Make sure you oil it and squeeze it out damp before you put it in there.

Hey Rocketraider
Nope didnt get the memo. LOL It does have the old style breather cap. It has some net type stuff in it. Ill pull the car back in the garage and take a look.

That's actually an aftermarket service part and probably better than the original design, which actually had a piece of foam rubber inside the mushroom which would rot out after a while. Meaning- no filter for the crankcase vent system, and the blowby would collect under the cap and drip all over everything.
Try washing that breather in kerosene and oiling it, or if you can find the parts, convert it to a closed PCV system.
But I've never seen a 371/394 that didn't have some blowby. Long as it's not using a lot of oil, I learned to live with it.
These engines are also known to have valve guide problems and if the valve seals are trash (I can guarantee they are), that will aggravate it. Then the pieces of valve seal plug up the drainback holes, oil collects in the valve covers and gets sucked in past the valve guides. I had one Starfire engine years ago that I tripled its oil mileage (from 500 miles/qt to 1500, which I could live with) simply by rodding out the drainbacks and installing new valve seals.

I have one that shoots the trans fluid out the dip stick tube. The trans works fine but throws fluid? I have been told that the vent behind the bell housing is plugged. I don't want to drop the trans but..........
