Oldsmobile was stabbed in the back by GM

Competition pushes a product forward, with out it the cars become stagnant
When GM was at its best there was a healthy competition between Divisions.
But Oldsmobile didn't move forward, at least not enough.
The import cars are not as good as the media say nor were the US cars as bad as they made out.

I believe I just said that.

Hi
GM gutted the Olds engineering department there is a member that used to work for them in the late 60's and told when Olds truly died the day they lost there engineers.
So it was not that Olds fell behind more of when they became generic.
I think this was the down turn of GM when they turned from a engineer run company to a accountant run company.
Car company's are all about the work force they are as good or bad as the people that work for them.
Good engineering is the most valuable asset to a car company next to management that recognize the company will succeed or fail based on there engineering.
Quality control is next in line
After the above are taken care of you can start talking to your accountants and marketing staff.

VW loses over 3million dollars on each Veyron they sell, the best money they have ever spent. The prestige, innovation and excitement it generates flows on to all their divisions.
GM spent 5 billion on the Saturn ?? I just had to google it! only to discover they are largely rebadged Korean and European POS's available here in Australia various guises.
And as I discovered I have had the misfortune of even turning plenty of miles in one. This was the VUE (? what sort of name is that ?). Here it is badged as a Captiva (locals call it the Craptiva), this is one of the god awful soulless things I have ever had the misfortune having to drive. After a few years of these horrendous things failing everywhere they cant give them away and depreciation is right up there with luxo brands. GM (Holdens ) solution, don't fix the issues (rocker failures electronic gremlins etc etc) well you give the punters a sunroof and side steps. Surprise surprise sales are still plummeting.
GM is the architect of its own demise and the sooner the better.
Holdens Aust made great cars and they too are now going the way of Olds and Pontiac.
This is what happens when the bean counters run things .These morons couldn't organise a back rub in a massage parlour.
GM's hay day was when people like Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell 'ran' the place from the Styling Dept. creating excitement, style and bold statements. When they left and things were Rationalized it spelt the end the car as a statement and relegated it to daily transport. If there is no excitement about a brand it will be overlooked.
I feel better now

Of the cars I recognise ; Opel Astra
Opel Vectra (Aura) Both Euro designed
Daewoo Captiva (Vue), and these are produced in Korea and shipped here badged as Holdens.
Hardly innovative for a 'new' Car brand.

Saturns were made in different factories around the world.
Vue - Spring Hill, Tennessee (2002-2007), Mexico (2007–2009)
Ion - Spring Hill, 2002-2007
S-Series - Spring Hill (1990-2002)
Relay - Doraville, Georgia (2005–2007)
Aura - Kansas City, Kansas)
Astra- Antwerp. Belgium (General Motors Europe)
Outlook - Lansing, Michigan
Sky, L-series - Wilmington, Delaware
The Captiva is made by Daewoo and sold as the Chevrolet Captiva in the U.S. and most of the rest of the world, the Holden Captiva in Australia, and the Daewoo Winstorm in South Korea. I can find no connection between any flavor of the Captiva and Saturn.
