Shifter cable question?

I have installed a hurst lighting rod shifter into my Grand National and notice that when the cable is hooked up its sticky to shift but when you remove the cable the shifter works smooth is this a cable problem its old so just wanted to see what anyone might know here about this problem before I put every thing back together. Would a new cable fix this of is this just a normal problem anyone?

It's very likely that one of more of the strands of your cable has broken inside the sheath and is creating friction. Replace it before it either strands you (by not letting you shift in or out of gear) or makes you break something (by pushing too hard on the shifter). Ask me how I know this (though my experience was with a standard G-body shifter, not lightning rods).
