New to forum, need advice on a '70 W-30 car

I'm new to this forum, I'm mainly a pontiac guy (early A and F bodies), but I realize I'm really a GM man through and through. My Dad had a '68 Olds Delmont 88 convert growing up, that we let slip out of the family, perhaps this will be a good replacement.

I've found a local '70 442, w-30 car, well documented, basically original owner car, 122K miles on the odometer, engine rebuilt in the 90's, car painted in the late 80's. Very clean, white, black interior and stripes, original black vinyl top, air , auto car, dual gate shifter, gauges. This car is not restored, but is in nice driver condition. It needs some TLC, but minimal best I can tell to get it on the road. I have not driven it or heard it fire. The front seat have been re-upholstered, the carpet was replaced with some non factory correct stuff.

The car is original best I can tell, numbers matching, correct under the hood. The owner has extensive paper work, build sheet (from under the carpet?), protecto-plate, original bill of sale, some computer punch card for delivery(!?!), no window sticker.

Okay, I know, pretty amazing or what!? Yes, I'm pumped, love the car, don't need another, have to sell a poncho to make room (please keep your jokes to a minimum my olds cousins... , it is an A body 65 GTO vert). My wife is going to kill me....(but will have a great collection upon my passing...lol)

So I know the value is whatever what anyone will pay for it, the value is in owning, enjoying it, etc, etc, etc. Having said all that, what's a fair price on the car? The car is not listed, owner is a great older guy, not overly motivated to sell. wants to sell it to someone who will drive and enjoy it.

Thanks, Dave

Way to little to go on photos would help just like your goat lots of little things to adjust value. what heads are on it is it a w-455 intake ,red inner fenders,
build date and location all w-30's were built in lansing so a letter M will be in the vin . is it a sport coupe or holiday ? ow transmission F heads good luck by the way hope it works out for you.

The car has the correct red inners, alum intake, F heads, original transmission, exhaust manifolds, carb, etc. Im not sure about the alternator, starter,. Car is a holiday coupe. I would need to verify the VIN, but I have no doubt it's a real w-30 car.

depends on condition, would like to see if it is a build sheet or a broadcast card that the owner has. I (and I'm not sure anyone else) have ever seen a Build Sheet from a Lansing car or more specifically from a W30. That being said maybe its the order form or broadcast card which is great to have.

If it is matching numbers and has all the parts even in cruddy condition it should be worth around 10- 15k - depending on condition you may be looking at a 25k car as is. Lots of good options and documented. W30 hardtops seem to be going up in price lately so it would be worth a decent penny if redone.

If the car is complete and correct, it's worth over $10K in parts alone. As noted above, it's extremely unusual to find a build sheet in a Lansing car, but even the broadcast card will have W30 on it, so it's definitely an important piece of documentation.

There's really no way to estimate value without more info, documentation, pictures, independent evaluation, etc.

A '70 W-30, even with a touch of rust, which has documentation, original owner, and is in absolutely original condition (with maybe just a few wear items replaced) might go for $100k. The exact same condition car, but without documentation and provenance, and which has obviously had lots of original parts replaced or restored over the years, might be worth only $10k.

There's people who will pay for originality, and there's people who will pay for ultimate restorations. In between the price falls off significantly.

Refer to the attached pics, not great in the garage. I'll get over there again and have a better look at the documentation. Appreciate the insights and comments.

Yikes, that car ain't worth much more than a grand or two - offer them 1k and I'll double your money.

looks like a great car. Tough to tell from those pics but maybe a repaint I say that as it looks like its missing the stripes on the decklid along with the chrome trim (or thats the only part that was repainted). But that could just be the low resolution of the pictures. Either way it looks like an unbelievable find! WOW!!

The radiator has been replaced and it looks like a different AC compressor. A correct radiator won't be easy to find but to me that is not a big deal.

Really don't worry about the other guys feeling your in this for you, if you can get it for $100 don't feel bad. The less you give the more you have to spend on it.
Just sit down with them and start talking price and get it for as cheap as possible.
Here is my 70 442 ramair 4 speed car! 110 MPH flip end over end 3Xs in a ditch! Sold hood for $500!!!

Offer lower, and see what gets their attention, if he shoots you a dirty look, bump it up a little, or ask "what were you thinking would be a fair price". You can always go up, but a bit hard to back track once an offer has been made.

That looks like a real nice car. I hope you can make it yours!

Just for fun, I wandered around eBay and Hemmings. The lowest asking price I saw for a '70 442 w30 is $45k. Heck, the lowest asking price for a non-w30 car in Hemmings is $22k. If the car you're looking at is what it looks like it is, seems a fair price for it may be north of $30k. What you offer and what the seller accepts is your business.

Before the detractors get all bent out of shape, the info above is simply a barometer for what current owners are shopping their cars out for. We obviously don't know what they're "selling" for, just what current owners are hoping to get. Hell, there's a guy on eBay asking over $100k for his w30 for awhile now. Maybe someday someone will pay him that much(?).

Heck I was thinking $5500!
I wouldn't sell my GTO and be out $40K just because this guy decided to make me the lucky candidate to buy his car!

Thanks again for the comments and insight. Love (hate) the pic s i 442! Same colors as this car, may need to talk to you about some parts, .

I did find out some info on 'sold' cars from a guy on the 442 forum. We're in right range on money. I don't want to squeeze him too hard, but will work it a bit. (and of course I did ask him his price first...) Going over there one day soon to get it outside, wash it, hang out with him, look at the paperwork (and put it in some protectors for him!), and hopefully strike a deal.

Hate to sell a conv montero red GTO with a tripower and 4 spd, not original drive train, but has a 428 tri power, M-22, car was a 389 four barrel, 3 spd stnd from the factory. I'd rather have this drive train than that one.... BUT, I've had my fun with it, and kept it 3 years longer than I promised the wife when I bought it to 'flip'..... not sure how to do that.

I will keep you posted.

Thanks Eric, very happy with the car, the condition, etc. the value in building a friendship over time with an owner cannot be over-stated. In the end he and his wife truly wanted me to have the car, and he knows I am not good at selling anything old . Great experience for all of us.

I have the build sheet from under the carpet, protecto plate, and punch card - I do not have the window sticker. I'll get a pic when I'm back in Mobile, Al which will be a couple of weeks.

Very nice car. Assuming all the proof checks out if you paid anything less than high 30's you could sell if you had to and not loose a dime.

My terminology may be off, this is the sheet from under the carpet that details out the options (the same sheet that was under the gas tank on my '70 GTO) I'll get pics when I'm home.

Still own the '65 GTO vert, hate to but need to sell her, as I'm up to too many old ones, clean car, it will sell. Do think the 442 makes itiworth letting go of the goat, and I'm true pontiac thru and thru

Keep the Poncho, sell the W. Someone here would probably step up
and you could make a few bucks. Good luck with your decision.
