Does anybody know if the shifter coming out of the boot had "442" imprinted on the shaft. i just heard about this, whether or not it's true is beyond me

Thumbs up 442 with a manual tranny

The 1965 442 which I have has "Hurst" just below the ball, and "442" further down (in the curve of the shifter).

Holy cow, guys!
Every year (through '73) except 1964, the stick 442s had "442" on the shifter handle.

Cool, Ozzie. You must have a 3-speed. What the date on your build? March '65 or later?

Hey Kurt, I'm definitely not questioning your knowledge, but what is this shifter all about? (I also saw an "original" shifter like this on eBay as well.)

Just has the "H"

Here's the original

So, if our tally is correct it looks like this:

1965: "442" and "Hurst" on the arm
1966: ?
1967-69: "442" and "H" on the arm (with the H lower on the arm than the 442)
1970-72: just an "H" on the arm

Is this correct?

Apparently here's a '67 Hurst shifter.

Don't hesitate to call me out, because if I'm wrong it won't be the first or last time I've been wrong!
I was under the impression that the shifters with only the "H" were non-442 applications in '70-'73 as it was in previous years, but I see that just didn't register with me that they dropped the 442 off the handle in 1970.

My 70 442 has the correct #7169 handle, and it says "H".

Now that I've extracted my foot from my mouth (leaving more room), in 1965, the only Hurst Shifters were the 3-speeds (with the HD F*rd toploader) option M14, starting in March '65. Those '65 442 3-speed shifters were the only manual shifters that had the whole word "HURST" on the handle.

In '65, the 4-speeds were still Muncie shifters and had only the "442" on handle.

In '66-'69, all 442s (all 3 and 4 speeds) had "442" and the "H" at the bottom, and all non-442s (all 3 and 4 speeds) had just the "H" at the bottom.
Additionally, '66s were square at the top and not tapered.

Hi Kurt,
You're absolutely correct. It's the M14 H.D. 3 speed just a few months later from Lansing.

This is an aftermarket Hurst Competition Plus for a 70-72 with console, as demonstrated by the bolt-on handle. All factory shifters had the snap-in handle.

442 shifter

My 69 442 has a Hurst shifter, but it has the straight handle instead of the curve. It has Hurst on the shifter, but obviously not the 442 and the H. Would it be possible to find the correct shifter handle and bolt it into my shifter?

I'm pretty sure the transmission is original, so somewhere along the way, the shifter got switched out. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Okay, Yogi and I did some more checking and found that his '66 doesn't have the word "HURST" on the handle.
The word "HURST" on the handle should be '65 3-speed only for Olds.

bringing back a 6 month old post, i know... would some of you factory 4-speed guys mind posting a few photos of your 4-speed console? i have a TH400 in my '71 and am saving my pennies for a Tremec 5-speed. i'm curious if i can get the Tremec shifter to work with my current console or if i'll have to change some things... how similar is the automatic center console to the 4-speed center console?

OldsDual-Gate.jpg

no worries, purists... it's not an all-original #'s matching car!

For 1970-72 they are the same. The manual trans consoles use an adapter that bolts on top and mounts the shifter boot. The console has score lines on the underside where it needs to be cut out to turn the AT console into an MT console. The MT adapters are available as repros.

Here's what the 4 speed console looks like together. You'll need to cut or replace your woodgrain insert.

DSC04954.jpg

By the way, my car had a Richmond manual trans in it weeks before I bought it in 2002 and it worked with the stock console (not so much with the factory floor hump setup though... ) It's back to an M20 now though.

Actually, you need to replace it. The AT woodgrain is too short since the AT shifter is further back on the console. Repros are available.

more on Tremec 5-speed conversions: i understand that Popular Hot Rodding is doing a magazine piece on a 1965 Olds Cutlass... the PHR Project Car is getting a Tremec manual transmission next. look for the feature sometime this summer.
