Hi I want to buy a 1967 442 how can I know that it’s a true 442 from the factory

The trim tag on firewall will say 5v or 5vy for cars not made in California. 5v legitimizes the 67 442.

Another way to make sure it is not a clone - All Cutlass models EXCEPT 442 had a C/S emblem on the pillar behind rear window. Get inside the car and remove the rear interior light. You will be able to see the pillar. If the pillar has a fill spot in it, then the original C/S emblem was removed and filled in.

Wouldn't that depend on whether or not the 442 is a "Post" versus "Hardtop"...

The C/S emblem is true only on Cutlass Supreme cars. Not an F85 or plain Cutlass.

Not 100% sure but I think only real 442s had a fuel return line.

All 67 442's were on the Cutlass Supreme body trim.

True all 67 Olds 442 cars are actually a 67 Cutlass Supreme with the 442 option. So, as the OP asked how can he tell?

It is easy if it is a Lansing built car. So, that would be an M in the vin number. Then on the cowl tag in the 5 option a V. If it is not a Lansing built car it is easier to prove it is not that it is. If that makes sense. If it is by vin or cowl tag an F85 or Cutlass but not a Cutlass Supreme it can not be a 442. If it has holes filled on the C pillar for the C/S emblems it is not a 442. (this can be seen if you remove the interior light on hardtop cars) If it had a ST300 AKA Jetway transmission it is not a 442. If it does not have duel fuel lines probably not a 442. but not all of the guys who restore them put them back after a frame off. So, just an indicator not proof. Plus a 67 Turnpike cruiser has dual fuel lines as well. If it has no body side moldings or the small spear moldings it did not come that way stock if it is a 442. Some people removed them so not proof. Then of course louvered hood, and grill and headlight doors but all bolt on stuff.

Wow clearly a CS emblem on the sail panel. Perhaps this was a pre-production or pilot car and the commercial made before the model year started?

Unfortunately, these ads and press photos were often made before the production configuration was finalized and the cars may not reflect the final production configuration. A classic example of this is the 1968 442 press photo that has W-36 stripes and fender emblems in the WRONG location.
