My 442 came with the am-fm mono radio from the factory. It still works fine but I wanted something with stereo sound(someone had added 2 speakers in the rear with ugly grilles showing). I looked at the "usa" brand retro radios,they have nice features but to me they just look cheap,the "retro-sound" radios look a little better since they do offer a chrome face plate & buttons but I just like the look of that factory radio,plus keeping the unique '68 only ***** was a priority. I even have a spare am-fm radio & I might send it in someday & get it converted to modern electronic internals but at around $500 I just can't justify the cost at this time for as little as I drive the car! Anyway I decided to go truly hi-tech! In the box that I had the spare '68 am-fm in was also an old Craig power-play underdash 8-track,that I've had since high school,that was 38 yrs ago!!! In it's day it was a decent unit plus it had a built in slide mount. It had a blown left channel but I found new output transistors online for $2 a piece,soldered them in,replaced the belt,cleaned it all up and the damn thing works great! I had already added 2 under-mount 6x9 speakers in the rear deck when I replaced the package tray 2 years ago. I bought a repop 10 ohm dash speaker from Electro-Tech(nice people!) & have the factory radio hooked up to that. While obviously not factory correct it's a nice "day 2 look" & I didn't have to hack anything up!!

A throw back to the 70's. Looks good. Craig or Kraco was the choice.
A Craig unit, nice. Available at you nearest K-mart. Blue-light special, save $5, lol, Love it.

My 1st car was a 69 88 4 dr. I had 4 Kraco 2X4's? screwed down to the package tray
with an am radio and a under dash 8-track, fond memories of days gone by.

Thanks for the complements guys! I forgot that I had it after all these years. My dad(86) was moving out of the big 2 story house, that he'd had since '76, into a 1 floor town-house. While cleaning out the attic over the garage I found a couple of boxes of my old Olds stuff that had been there since the 80s. I had a bunch of 442 stuff stored over at his place but I thought I had got it all out back in '04 when I built my new garage. The internet is amazing with everything that's out there!! It was no trouble at all to find parts to repair the tape deck,plus I found a bunch of old 8-track tapes for cheap. There a couple of great sellers (8 track shack & 8 track avenue) that have new head cleaning tapes & repair parts like the pre-cut foam pads for the tapes themselves. I wish I could have installed it about 2 inches further back but the car has a/c & the plastic ducting under the dash was in the way.
